Position Overview
The Advanced Framework for Simulation, Integration, and Modeling (AFSIM) is an innovative, open-source military simulation framework used extensively by the U.S. Department of Defense (DoD) and related communities. Managed by the U.S. Air Force Research Laboratory (AFRL), AFSIM supports scenario creation, analytical work, and virtual wargaming, benefiting from a collaborative user community across the military, government, industry, academia, and international partners. To enable continued exploration of emerging technologies, AFRL will employ military utility studies and the AFSIM framework to assess system capabilities.
In this highly technical role, the Operations Research Analyst will guide AFRL projects to facilitate technology assessment. These efforts will include customer collaboration to understand requirements, plan and execute studies, and provide comprehensive analytic results. The analyst will also contribute to the technical development of simulation products and processing techniques in an Agile collaborative environment - capitalizing on tightly-coupled government-industry software teams to rapidly deliver value to our customers.

Essential Job Function
Study Lead
- Advise and assist in the collection of study requirements elicited and captured at multiple classification levels and in constant collaboration with study customers
- Lead documentation of study requirements through a study plan, or similar artifact
- Lead development and execution of a study plan suitable for rapid delivery of study objectives using the AFSIM framework and other relevant M&S tools
- Lead development and integration of AI/ML models into AFSIM, and lead AI/ML model and product development for general use.
- Ensure successful articulation of study outcomes via study reports, MS PowerPoint presentation, or verbal briefs as required
- Employ AFSIM to support engagement-, mission-, or mission plus-level studies through detailed modeling of systems and systems-of-systems and their relevant behaviors and tactics
- Employ various M&S tools such as JMP, or similar, to apply statistical methods toward the production of analytic, military utility results
- Employ Python libraries such as Tensorflow or equivalent to develop, integrate and deploy AI/ML products to enhance simulation fidelity
- Develop and deliver study results tailored to individual study and customer requirements
- Instruct team members on the application and use of MS&A tools, analytical methods, and ORA techniques
- Mentor emerging talents to continually promote our team’s technical growth
Education And Experience
- Bachelor's Degree in Mathematics, Computer Science, Physics, or a related discipline
- Minimum 2 Years of Experience supporting DoD R&D in operations research or a related field, with demonstrated expertise in scripting and behavior modeling within the AFSIM framework
- Demonstrated success as technical lead for military utility or similar studies
- Strong background in modern collaborative development practices, including Agile methodologies and Agile tooling such as GitLab or Jira
- Proficiency in programming languages such as Python, Java, C , or similar, and familiarity with software development tools and environments
- Proficiency in analytic tools such as R, JMP, Cygwin, MS Excel, or similar
- Ability to prepare and review technical documentation and maintain comprehensive study plans and deliverable artifacts
- Secret clearance and eligible for higher level accesses
- Master’s degree in a related field
- Certifications supportive of analytical skill sets
