What are the responsibilities and job description for the Seasonal Botanical Field Technician position at Stillwater Sciences?
Stillwater Sciences is seeking several highly dedicated and passionate junior- to mid-level botanists to join our interdisciplinary staff for a seasonal, on-call position. We are looking for botanists interested in applying their knowledge of Oregon flora to an annual vegetation monitoring project in northwestern Oregon.
Responsibilities may include plant identification, vegetation data collection, photographic monitoring, measuring canopy closure (shade monitoring), and other field data collection. Some in-office deskwork may also be required. This is a temporary position paid hourly. Field efforts are anticipated to up to 40 hours per week starting in June and typically extend into September. Scheduling may be somewhat flexible for highly qualified candidates (e.g. to accommodate student schedules, etc.).
The ideal applicant should have:
- Prior field experience
- Excellent plant identification skills (sufficient knowledge of the local flora to be able to identify most natural occurring plant species on sight)
- Ability to work as part of a team and a solution-oriented attitude
- Competency to follow directions and field safety protocols
- Attention to detail and commitment to sound science
- Solid navigational skills using maps and GPS
Qualifications:
- Have earned or in the process of earning a BS or BA in botany or similar degree
- Ability to traverse difficult terrain including steep slopes, muddy wetlands with standing water, and extremely dense brush
- Ability to move equipment of 25 pounds or more
- Constantly work in variable outdoor weather conditions
- A valid driver’s license and good driving record
