The Nurse Unit Manager is responsible for the daily clinical operations of an assigned nursing unit, ensuring the delivery of high-quality, person-centered care. This leadership role involves supervising nursing staff, coordinating care services, maintaining regulatory compliance, and fostering a positive and professional work environment. The Unit Manager works closely with residents, families, and interdisciplinary team members to promote overall wellness and satisfaction.
Nurse Unit Manager Responsibilities
- Supervise and support nursing staff, including RNs, LPNs, and STNAs ensuring competent and compassionate care delivery.
- Supervise nursing staff on the Memory Care unit, ensuring consistent, high-quality care for residents with cognitive impairments.
- Educate and support staff on dementia-specific care approaches, including redirection techniques, behavior management, and communication strategies.
- Collaborate with the Activities Department to ensure therapeutic programming aligns with resident abilities and interests.
- Educate staff on infection prevention practices including hand hygiene, PPE use, cleaning protocols, and standard precautions.
- Implement and maintain an effective infection prevention and control program in accordance with CDC, CMS, OSHA, and state guidelines
- Provide training and ongoing competency assessments related to infection control policies and procedures
- Participate in facility audits and inspections related to infection control; prepare reports and maintain documentation.
- Collaborate with interdisciplinary teams to develop resident care plans that include infection prevention strategies.
- Lead facility response to communicable disease outbreaks, including isolation protocols and staff communication.
- Ensure compliance with employee health programs, including vaccinations and TB testing.
- Stay up to date with current regulations and best practices in infection prevention and translate that knowledge into staff education and policy updates.
- Plan and conduct in-service education programs to address skill development, regulatory updates, and competency requirements.
- Maintain documentation of all training, certifications, and competency evaluations.
- Identify learning needs and develop individualized education plans as needed.
- Collaborate with leadership and department heads to ensure staff education supports quality assurance and performance improvement initiatives.
- Participate in admission, discharge, and transfer processes, ensuring continuity of care.
- Assist with developing and implementing individualized care plans based on resident assessments.
- Monitor staffing levels and assignments to maintain appropriate coverage and manage overtime.
- Support ongoing education and competency development among team members.
- Participate in quality assurance, infection control, and safety initiatives.
