What are the responsibilities and job description for the Scaler position at Stimson Lumber Company?
Priest River Log Scaler:
Stimson Lumber Company is seeking a certified Log Scaler to work full time on our Log Yard. We are looking for an experienced Scaler with a commitment to safety and continuous improvement to join our team. The successful candidate will calculate the gross and net volume of logs delivered into our mill and actively work and communicate with our team of Log Scalers and Equipment Operators. This position requires a current Scaling License.
Your Accountabilities:
Assess and record any log quality infractions based on set specifications.
Identify and record species of delivered logs.
Record length and diameters as necessary for gross scale.
Determine and deduct from gross scale any defect or volume loss using applicable methods based on Region 1 USFS Log Scale Rules.
Mark out (paint) cull logs and logs that contain objects that can cause equipment damage or a safety hazard.
Effectively communicate with log suppliers, landowners, supervisors, foresters, loggers and yard personnel any pertinent information.
Assist log yard operators with sorting issues as needed.
Assist with monthly physical inventory.
Your Qualifications:
Must hold a current Scalers license or acquire one in a reasonable amount of time.
Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
Detail oriented with ability to work independently when proficient in tasks.
Accurately scale logs with a strong sense of urgency.
Demonstrated commitment to safety and attendance.
Able and willing to work variable schedules, including 5 days/week and 40 hours.
Able and willing to work outdoors in all weather conditions.
Able and willing to stand, walk, and work on uneven surfaces for 10 hours/day.
Log Scaler experience, including operating handheld computers preferred.
