Description
The STMAYHA Director of Player Development (DPD) will work closely with the Executive Board and Hockey Operations Committee to establish and execute a comprehensive hockey program with an emphasis on player development and a singular goal of providing the best hockey experience for all STMAYHA players and families. The DPD will have the day-to-day responsibility for developing and implementing the strategy for the association’s player development.
The DPD will report to the Board and provide monthly updates. The STMAYHA President will be the primary contact for the DPD on day-to-day operations and will collaborate frequently on matters such as:
- Offseason, preseason, and in-season hockey development of STMAYHA players.
- Operational details related to tryouts and in-season skill development.
- Coaching development, training, and review.
Job Responsibilities
The STMAYHA DPD will have the following roles:
- Oversee preseason and in-season hockey development for both the girls and boys programs.
- Designing an in-season practice progression for all age and skill levels of play.
- Design appropriate programs for each level of play.
- Provide advice to coaches throughout the season regarding practice plans to deal with specific situations.
- Attending a minimum of one practice every week for each travel team, and one weekend per month for Mites/8U, to observe and provide an independent evaluation of both players and coaches.
- Establish a coaching evaluation process that provides timely and constructive feedback and training to maximize their ability to develop players.
- Oversee tryouts for all levels of play above Mite/8U/6U.
- Develop a tryout plan for each level in collaboration with the Executive Board and HOC
- Assist in sourcing and engaging independent tryout evaluators for each level.
- Execute the tryout plan and ensure tryouts are executed in an efficient and unbiased manner that minimizes player and parent concerns.
- Oversee coaching development.
- Organize pre-season and in-season coach development sessions.
- Be a resource to coaches regarding practice plans by providing ideas, drills and execution of the skill progression for each level.
- Consult with the HOC on programs and issues that arise with respect to coaching and between coaching staff members.
*The DPD will not be the primary point of contact for issues between coaches on a coaching staff, however, the DPD will work with Boys and Girls HOC Directors, other HOC Members and the Executive Board on these issues because they affect the development of the players.
- Oversee postseason review.
- Establish a process to obtain and analyze player evaluations from each coach at the conclusion of each season.
- Propose team level structures to STMAYHA Board for approval.
- Coordinate hockey development efforts with the boys and girls hockey coaches at STMA High School.
- Assist in determining the appropriate amount of on-ice and off-ice training for each playing level. Interact with the STMAYHA Ice Scheduler as necessary to ensure ice time guidelines are being followed.
- The DPD will not be the primary point of contact for parent complaints with respect to playing time or coaching. That will be handled by the level leads or Boys and Girls Director of Hockey Operations will consult with and play a part in resolving such issues because they are integral to the successful development of STMAYHA players and teams.
- Interact with the STMAYHA Goalie Director or outside goalie development provider regarding hockey development issues as they arise and will provide general guidance to the STMAYHA Board regarding goalie development.
- The DPD will not be the primary point of contact for SafeSport issues.
Required Qualifications
- Strong interpersonal skills including electronic communication skills are vital in this position in corresponding with the Board and HOC Members
- Coaching experience at the youth and/or high school/college level.
- Experience teaching hockey skills development.
- Experience and success coaching youth hockey programs/players.
- Hockey playing experience at the junior, college and/or professional level.
- Ability to craft and present strategic plans and provide progress reports and executive summaries to the Board.
Compensation
Compensation will be based on qualifications of the candidate.
