Title: Sanitation Equipment Operator

Location: Stokes County Solid Waste

Salary Range: $39,100.00 - $62,600.00

Closing Date: Until filled

Duties include properly driving and operation truck(s) and other light to medium duty equipment of varying complexity used for the hauling of solid waste. Performs grounds maintenance as required.

Employees in this class are responsible of the proper driving and operation of various types of trucks to tractor, roll-off, and front-end loader. Performs routine maintenance/repair on equipment as required; reports other required maintenance to the supervisor to keep the transport of solid waste, such as garbage trucks, flatbed trucks, backhoe, and light pick-up truck, trucks/equipment operating in a safe and effective manner. A large portion of the job is performed outside with exposure to heat, cold, humidity, noise, chemical and mechanical hazards. Job requires operation of equipment such as vehicles, lawn equipment and power tools.

• Performs grounds maintenance around transfer station and sites.
• Assists general public with unloading vehicles at the landfill.
• Utilizes a variety of supplies and materials in order to perform the job including mechanic’s tools, hand tools, weed-eaters, lawn mowers, etc.
• Communicates with several persons in the performance of duties including other equipment operators, the Senior Office Assistant, Supervisor and general public in completing daily tasks.
• Performs other related duties as required.
• Knowledge of the methods, practices, and procedures of garbage pickup, grounds keeping and general maintenance as they pertain to the performance of duties of the position.
• Knowledge in the safe operational procedures in the use of equipment, machines, and tools.
• General knowledge to complete accurate work related orders, requests and other correspondence as specified by the department.
• Ability to comprehend trade terminology and principles.
• Ability to complete daily activities within assigned time frames.
• Ability to take the initiative to complete the duties of the position without the need of constant overview.
• Ability to apply common sense understanding to perform tasks in a safe, effective, and timely manner.
• Ability to read, understand and complete written requests and work assignments. Has the ability to perform required duties and responsibilities in extreme weather conditions.

Must be physically able to operate a variety of motor vehicles, trucks, machinery, and equipment including two-way radios, hand tools. Must be able to exert up to 100 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 50 pounds of force frequently, and/or a negligible amount of force constantly to life , carry, push, pull or otherwise move objects. Work may involve walking, standing, running, and physical exertion. Physical demands are those for heavy work.

High School diploma preferred, or any equivalent combination of education and experience which provides the required knowledge, skills and ability. Must possess a valid N. C. Commercial Driver’s License.

Possession of a valid Commercial Driver’s License issued by the State of North Carolina. Must be able to communicate via two-way radio.
