Position Type: Seasonal (18 May to 13 October); Part-time (up to 40 hours per week)
Overview:
Stonington Harbor Yacht Club is seeking reliable and professional Launch Driver(s) to join our team for the upcoming season. As a Launch Driver, you will be responsible for operating the Club’s launch boat transporting up to six passengers between the Club dock and vessels in the harbor. You’ll be the face of the Yacht Club on the waterfront, providing excellent service in a safe and friendly environment.
Key Responsibilities:
Launch Operations: Operate the club’s launch boat following all applicable maritime regulations to shuttle members, guests, and pass holders to and from their boats in the harbor.
Safety & Weather Awareness: Ensure safe navigation of the launch boat at all times. Monitor weather conditions and adjust operations as necessary to ensure safety for all passengers and vessels.
Customer Service: Greet members and guests with a friendly and professional demeanor. Provide assistance with luggage, gear, and other personal items when necessary. Help guide visiting boats to and from the Club managed docks and moorings.
Communication: Maintain clear and effective communication with the General Manager, Dockmaster and other team members to ensure smooth coordination of launch schedules, visiting boat arrivals and departures, and guest access to the Clubhouse. Communicate effectively over the VHF radio with other vessels, local maritime entities, and the harbormaster.
Maintenance: Perform routine checks on the boat to maintain its operational readiness; including fueling, cleaning, and ensuring equipment is in proper working condition. Keep a log of operations and maintenance completed.
Waterfront: Assist with Morning and Evening Colors. Assist with handling lines for visiting vessels.
Requirements:
Experience: Prior experience operating boats or working in a maritime environment is preferred but not required. Training may be provided.
Licensing: Valid USCG-issued Limited Operator of Uninspected Passenger Vessels (OUPV)
- Routine physical examination including eye exam and Drug Test
- First Aid/CPR Certificate: dated within 12months of your USCG License application * Sea Service Form – 90 days (4 hrs/day), 90 days in the last three years
- TWIC Card: Transportation Worker Identification Credential (1st time USCG license applicants)
Skills: Strong knowledge of boating safety procedures, navigation, and docking protocols.
Physical Requirements: Ability to lift and carry up to 40 lbs., work in various weather conditions, and maintain physical stamina for long shifts.
Dependability: Must be punctual, reliable, and flexible with hours, as the launch operation may require early morning, evening, or weekend shifts.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Prior experience as a launch driver, dockhand, or in a customer-facing role in a maritime setting
- Familiarity with Stonington Harbor and its surrounding waterways is a plus
- Driver’s License
Work Location & Schedule:
- SHYC waterfront and the immediate waters adjacent to the Stonington Harbor Marina
- Part-time 8 to 40 hours per week (daily hours of operation run between 8am to 10pm)
