Director of Pharmacy - Eastern Long Island Hospital


Position Summary

This position requires the Director of Pharmacy responsible for determining, developing, implementing and monitoring long term and short-term goals for the pharmacy based on developments and trends in healthcare and institutional pharmacy practice and the specific needs of the institution.

Duties of the Director of Pharmacy may include the following but are not limited to:

  • To register with the New York State Board of Pharmacy as the supervising pharmacist, recognizing the full responsibility for all activities in the pharmacy department.
  • The Pharmacy Director will manage all administrative duties associated with overseeing pharmacy staff and spearhead strategic planning initiatives.
  • Ideal candidates will foster a sense of belonging within the team and possess the ability to multitask and build effective working relationships across all departments.
  • To serve as Secretary of the Pharmacy and Therapeutics Committee and to be a member of the Infection Control and Safety Committees and any other committee when called upon.
  • To develop and maintain a drug formulary and performance improvement program for the pharmacy through the Pharmacy and Therapeutics Committee.
  • To provide accurate record keeping and control of all controlled substances as required by state and federal laws.
  • To provide information to the hospital and medical staffs on pharmaceuticals by sharing these resources through in-service programs.
  • To ensure continued competency of all pharmacy staff personnel through relevant continuing education programs and activities.
  • To develop and maintain a pharmacy department policy and procedure manual in accordance with Joint Commission standards and federal and New York State laws.
  • To develop and maintain job descriptions for all categories of pharmacy personnel and to provide an annual written, criteria-based performance review for each member.
  • To interview and recommend persons for hiring, disciplinary action or discharge in cooperation with the Human Resources Department and administration.
  • To establish procedures for in servicing new employees in the Pharmacy Department. To orient new nurses and nursing supervisors to the Pharmacy Department’s policies and procedures.
  • To supervise the day-to-day operation of the Pharmacy Department including work schedules, systems and procedures to most efficiently utilize personnel and resources.
  • To prepare salary, operating and capital expense budgets, year-end inventories and to provide other statistical reports as needed for administration and fiscal services departments.
  • To have full responsibility for procurement, distribution and control of all medications that are ordered through the Pharmacy Department. This includes the removal from stock of all unusable, outdated or recalled items.
  • To meet with pharmaceutical sales representatives to discuss new products, health trends, contract negotiations, in-service training, sampling, and policy and procedures governing sales representative’s activities while in the hospital.
  • To consult with other department directors to resolve problems.
  • To serve as program coordinator of the Hazardous Materials Program as per policy A-177.
  • Maintain order and cleanliness.
  • Cooperates with all personnel in the proper conduct of the department. · Maintains ethical relationships.
  • Adheres to hospital and departmental rules and regulations.
  • Participate in in-service programs.

Qualifications

Required Qualifications

  • PharmD/BS degree in Pharmacy
  • Current New York State Pharmacist License/Registration
  • At least 2 years of Hospital Pharmacy experience
  • At least 1 year of Supervisory experience

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to communicate with patients, office staff and medical providers. The employee must be able to exchange accurate information in these situations.

  • Ability to lift thirty (30) pounds off the floor onto a countertop
  • Adequate mobility to retrieve stock and transport medication carts
  • Adequate manual dexterity to compound and dispense prescriptions, including IV admixtures and other sterile products

  • This function/position maybe designated as “essential.” This means that when the Hospital is faced with an institutional emergency, employees in such positions may be required to remain at their work location or to report to work to protect, recover, and continue operations at Stony Brook Medicine, Stony Brook Eastern Long Island and related facilities.

Anticipated Pay Range:

The starting salary range (or hiring range) for this position has been established based on relevant experience. The above salary range (or hiring range) represents SBEILH’s good faith and reasonable estimate of the range of possible compensation at the time of posting. Your total compensation goes beyond the number in your paycheck!

Prior to start date, the selected candidate must meet the following requirements:

  • Successfully complete pre-employment physical examination and obtain medical clearance from Stony Brook Eastern Long Island’s Employee Health Services *
  • Complete electronic reference check with a minimum of three (3) professional references.
  • Successfully complete a 4 panel drug screen*
  • Meet Regulatory Requirements for pre-employment screenings.
  • Provide a copy of any required New York State license(s)/certificate(s).

Failure to comply with any of the above requirements could result in a delayed start date and/or revocation of the employment offer.

  • The Human Resources department will be responsible for any fee incurred for examination.
