Phlebotomist /Associate - Temporary
RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Collect blood from patients following established standards and practices. Assure the quality of the specimen.
- Assume the responsibility for the safety and comfort of patient.
- Maintains clinical laboratory files and records.
- Receive in and process all specimens from hospital floors, ER, off sites and physicians' offices and deliver to correct department.
- Prepare specimens to be send out to reference laboratories.
- Track all specimens from Peconic Bay and ELI and complete receiving work list.
- Print and complete the manifest from Quest and Imugen.
- Handle all phone calls from Quest, Imugen, Dr. Offices and off sites in regard to specimen handling.
- Complete all pending problems in problem log and handle accordingly.
- Continuously check pending log throughout shift to ensure there are no missing specimens.
- Handle all Quest and Lab Corp. pass-throughs accurately.
- Complete PKU's.
- Process all add-ons.
- Check, sign in and put away all irretrievable specimens from other departments.
- File all processing paperwork monthly in the appropriate folders.
- Ensure all specimens/orders from floors or ER are processed.
- Call to inquire about orders with no specimens or specimens with no orders.
- Investigate and follow-up on all problems.
- Perform other duties as directed by the Laboratory Administration or Supervisors.
QUALIFICATIONS:
- High School Diploma or equivalent education.
- Completion of phlebotomy course and or previous phlebotomy experience.
- Ability to travel offsite if required.
- Basic office skills and computer keyboarding skills required. Organizational skills, medical terminology and ICD-9 coding knowledge.
- Excellent customer service, communication and interpersonal skills.
- Once year phlebotomy experience preferred.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS:
- Employee may be exposed to the danger of infection from contaminated materials or needle puncture.
- Subject to prolonged walking or standing.
- Employee is subject to stress, eye-strain, repetitive motion strain and periods of prolonged sitting and/or bending.
- Employee must be able to lift banker box filled with files containing laboratory paper data.
- Stony Brook Medicine is a smoke-free environment. Smoking is strictly prohibited anywhere on campus, including parking lots and outdoor areas on the premises.
- All Hospital positions may be subject to changes in pass days and shifts as necessary.
- This position may require the wearing of respiratory protection, which may prohibit the wearing of facial hair.
- This function/position maybe designated as “essential.” This means that when the Hospital is faced with an institutional emergency, employees in such positions may be required to remain at their work location or to report to work to protect, recover, and continue operations at Stony Brook Medicine, Stony Brook Southampton and related facilities.

The starting salary range (or hiring range) for this position has been established based on relevant experience.
