Position Summary
The Laboratory Business Management Support will assist both the Clinical and Anatomic divisions of the Department of Laboratories. The position reports to Administrative Director of Clinical Pathology. This position is to provide support as assigned in the Laboratory Business Management operations including, but not limited to: supply and expense budgeting, cost reduction initiatives, capital equipment procurement, development and management of reference lab contracts and vendor supply agreements, Inventory management, and Lawson procurement system oversight.
Duties of a Laboratory Business Management Support may include the following but are not limited to:
- Assists in preparation, implementation and monitoring of the S&E (OTPS), recharge, and capital equipment budget. Provides budget reports and analysis as assigned. Assists in analyzing monthly Financial Management Reports and Financial Laboratory Variance Reports. Identify causes of variances and identifies corrective actions. Assists in the implementation of new processes, as assigned. Assists in developing, updating, and maintaining relevant Department of Laboratories Crystal reports to assist in the fiscal analysis and purchasing functions. Assists in developing and submission of budget adjustment forms for laboratory accounts as required. Performs business analysis and develops business plans as assigned.
- Assists in internal S&E cost savings initiatives as assigned.
- Assists in all of the following; management capital equipment procurement and budget. Establishing and maintaining equipment service contracts and lease agreements according to all relevant regulations and statutes. Work with Biomedical Engineering Department to resolve equipment problems and maintain required equipment records. Monitoring all Laboratory service contract performance. Working with purchasing to resolve any issues with vendors. Overseeing biological safety cabinet certifications and repairs. Ensuring that all equipment is maintained as per NYS DOH and CAP requirements.
- Assists in overseeing the development of reference laboratory requisitions to Purchasing Department. Develop RFPs, RFIs or bid specifications as needed. Assists in managing RFP, RFI, or bid process from initiation of request to final award. Work with Purchasing Department, vendors, and end users to expedite process within NYS procurement regulatory requirements, as assigned. Assists in monitoring invoice approval process to ensure proper use of funding.
- Assists in overseeing the development of blanket and standing order requests to Purchasing department. Assists in monitoring optimization of NYS and Group Purchasing Organization contract pricing. Assists in overseeing procurement process for reagents and supplies to ensure timely ordering, shipment and delivery. Assists in overseeing invoice payment process to assure avoidance of credit holds and minimize lapsing funds and late payment interest charges. Assists in monitoring change order process to ensure that all unnecessary funds are removed from orders as needed.
- Assists Laboratory Business Management in requisitioning, acceptance and distribution of laboratory reagents, supplies, and equipment. Oversee maintenance of the laboratory storeroom, as assigned. Assists in overseeing optimal laboratory inventory management levels with a goal to minimize ordering, holding, and shortage costs. Assists in overseeing laboratory records retention in compliance with all relevant regulations.
- Assists in coordinating Lawson System usage for Laboratory accounts. Provide assistance as needed to Laboratory Lawson users. Resolve Lawson related problems as needed.
- Complete administrative projects as assigned e.g., Laboratory Services contracts evaluations.
This is a temporary opportunity that may end at any time.
Required Qualifications: Bachelor's degree and at least 1 year of relevant procurement cycle/budgeting experience. Competency with computer applications, e.g., Microsoft Office (word, excel and PowerPoint). Excellent interpersonal and written skills. Candidate must be able to think tactically and strategically.
Preferred Qualifications: Degree specialty of Business or Health Sciences. Degree in Clinical Laboratory Sciences. Experience in clinical or associated service. Supervisory experience. Writing, maintaining, and scheduling of reports using Crystal Reports business intelligence application. ASCP or NY SED licensure as a Clinical Laboratory Technologist.

Anticipated Pay Range:
The starting salary range (or hiring range) for this position has been established as $35 - $41 / hour.
The above salary range represents SBUH’s good faith and reasonable estimate of the range of possible compensation at the time of posting. The specific salary offer will be based on the candidate’s validated years of comparable experience. Any efforts to inflate or misrepresent experience are grounds for disqualification from the application process or termination of employment if hired.
