What are the responsibilities and job description for the Clinical Laboratory Technologist position at Stony Brook University?
POSITION SUMMARY :
- Clinical Laboratory Technologists perform various biochemical, immunoassay, microscopic and bacteriological tests to obtain data for use in diagnosis and treatment of disease.
- Prepare microscopic slides as necessary. Study slides using microscopic techniques and / or subject specimens to automatic analyzing equipment or manual techniques to perform qualitative and quantitative analyses.
- Verify specimen acceptability. Identify and label all specimens accurately including aliquots. Retain and store specimens properly for further reference or use.
- Prepare, calibrate and verify performance of laboratory instrumentation. Perform instrument maintenance as required. Troubleshoot laboratory instrumentation problems.
- Uses clinical judgment and knowledge to report laboratory test results using laboratory information systems or utilizing manual report forms (in case of computer downtime). Ensure critical values are called immediately.
- Able to troubleshoot and utilize problem-solving skills when necessary. Notify Laboratory supervisors of any problems, unresolved issues or customer complaints timely.
- Perform and record quality control results. Apply appropriate quality control rules to determine test run acceptability.
- Run correlation, linearity and proficiency samples as requested by the Laboratory Supervisor.
- Participate in laboratory and hospital performance improvement projects and objectives.
- Ally principles of customer service to all aspects of daily work.
- Train, orient, mentor and supervise new employees and / or students in the laboratory.
- Follow established hospital, departmental, safety, environmental and infection control policies and procedures.
- Comply with all regulatory requirements and maintain all records as needed by Joint Commission. College of American Pathologists, and New York State Department of Health agencies including quality control, quality assurance, equipment maintenance records, annual education, and employee health assessments.
- Follow HIPAA and hospital compliance policies.
- Perform other duties as requested by the Manager or Supervisor.
Clinical Laboratory Technologists may be assigned "Lead" or "Technologist in Charge" duties. Responsibilities include but are not limited to the following :
