Required Qualifications (as Evidenced By An Attached Resume)

Bachelor’s degree (foreign equivalent or higher) in Public Health, Health Sciences, Psychology, Social Work or related field. Three (3) of full-time related work experience in conducting alcohol and other drug outreach, education, early intervention or harm reduction services (student experience may be considered). Experience working with a college or university population or with emerging adults.

Preferred Qualifications

Master’s degree (foreign equivalent or higher) in Public Health, Higher Education, Social Work or related field. CHES or CPH certification. Experience leading peer education programs, including curriculum development, training, or supervising peer educators. Experience with Microsoft Office and/or Google applications.

Brief Description Of Duties

The Coordinator of Alcohol and Other Drug Services will use a data-driven and evidence-informed approach to deliver comprehensive outreach and intervention programs aimed at reducing the risks associated with alcohol and other drug (AOD) use, while promoting overall wellness among students. This role encompasses population-level and individual-level outreach, peer education and supervision, collaboration with campus and community partners, and professional development.

The incumbent plays a crucial role as a team member within the overall campus health and wellness departments. In this capacity, they collaborate with colleagues across various units to enhance the effectiveness and integration of health, wellness, and prevention services. This includes actively participating in divisional meetings, sharing insights, and contributing to collaborative decision-making processes. The incumbent fosters a cooperative and supportive environment, ensuring seamless teamwork and alignment with the shared goals and objectives of campus health and wellness initiatives. This position may be required to provide support in other areas of student health, wellness, and prevention services, as needed.

Population Level Outreach

  • Develop, implement and assess data-driven and evidence-informed, population-level outreach throughout campus aimed at preventing and reducing harm from alcohol and other drug use, problem gambling, and associated risks. Responsibilities include but not limited to:
    • Coordinating and conducting the Red Watch Band and Narcan bystander intervention training programs.
    • Hosting engaging large-scale events that help students develop an understanding of the risks associated with AOD use, identifying problem gambling signs, how to identify misuse and abuse, how to reduce harm, effective coping skills, safer sex practices, and the connection between AOD and other aspects of wellness.
    • Working with CPO team members to create and implement social norming campaigns aimed at reducing student substance misuse and abuse, reducing problem gambling behaviors and promoting safer sex.
    • Conduct workshops, tabling, and other events to educate students on AOD, problem gambling and safer sex topics to increase knowledge, change attitudes and behaviors.
    • Review current and upcoming AOD or problem gambling legislation and work with senior leadership on modifying prevention and outreach efforts to ensure compliance.
    • Conduct annual review of AOD services and work with leadership to identify gaps and problem solve solutions.
    • Create and implement skill-based workshop series to address AOD use and provide practical skills for students to use to decrease risk.
Individual Level Outreach

  • Using a BASICS / SBIRT based approach, provide individual outreach and psychoeducation to students in need, including but not limited to:
    • Managing the Alcohol and Other Drug Assessment Committee - an interdisciplinary group of professionals assessing alcohol and drug infractions and ensuring proper follow up.
    • Conduct mandated psychoeducational interventions with students including one-on-one and group settings.
    • Conduct AOD focused screenings to identify high-risk students and refer them to resources. Including but not limited to training student assistants, peer educators and professional staff on implementing screening tools and providing tailored interventions.
Peer Education & Supervision

  • Using a student-centered approach, provide supervision and training to peer education interns and student assistants within CPO. This includes but not limited to:
    • Overseeing a cohort of harm reduction focused interns including organizing their outreach schedule, hosting weekly team meetings and providing training on best practices around health education and outreach in a college setting.
    • Supervise student assistant(s) with a role focused on harm reduction, recovery, AOD or associated topics.
Collaboration And Partnerships

  • This position requires continuous collaboration with on and off campus patterns to ensure we make a large and effective impact. This includes but is not limited to:
    • Extensive collaboration with the members of the CPO team to ensure departmental goals and initiatives are met including conducting non-AOD or harm reduction focused bystander training, workshops and events.
    • Collaborations will also focus on weaving AOD/harm reduction and other topics to educate students on the connections between the different dimensions of wellness.
    • Collaboration with partners within Student Health, Wellness and Prevention Services to empower students to take care of all aspects of their health and wellness.
    • Working with community partners to bring experts and external resources to campus to grow the health and wellness safety net for students.
    • Work with Stony Brook’s University Police Department to offer trainings, workshops and other programing including but not limited to Drug Take Back Day and Campus Safety Day.
    • This position is based on Stony Brook University’s main (West) campus but will require occasional work/travel to the East (hospital) and Southampton campuses as the position serves all Stony Brook students. Travel to regional, state or national professional development opportunities and/or training may also be required at times.
Professional Development And Committee Involvement

  • Participates in opportunities that promote their learning, growth, and development (i.e., classes, training, committees, webinars).
  • Contributes to the Division of Student Affairs and Stony Brook University by attending and/or supporting events, activities, and programs sponsored by areas within and outside the Office of Student Life (i.e., campus-wide traditions, events, programs).
  • Other duties or projects as assigned as appropriate to rank and departmental mission.
  • An average of one evening and occasional weekend work wi ll be required at times.

Special Notes

This is a full-time appointment. FLSA Exempt position, not eligible for the overtime provisions of the FLSA. Minimum salary threshold must be met to maintain FLSA exemption.

In addition to the employee's base salary, this position is eligible for $3,400 UUP annual location pay, paid biweekly.

Essential Position: This has been designated as an essential position based on the duties of the job and the functions performed. Positions that are designated as such may be required to report to work/remain at work even if classes are canceled, and the campus is working on limited operations in an emergency.
