Required Qualifications (as Evidenced By An Attached Resume)
Bachelor’s degree (foreign equivalent or higher) in social work, psychology, community health, public health, or related fields. Three (3) years of full time related work experience in providing advocacy and crisis intervention to survivors of relationship violence, stalking or sexual assault. Experience conducting education or outreach around health and wellness topics. Experience with Microsoft Office Suite and/or Google applications.
Preferred Qualifications
Master’s degree (foreign equivalent or higher) in social work, public health or related field. Additional years (4 ) of full time related work experience in providing advocacy and crisis intervention to survivors of relationship violence, stalking or sexual assault. Experience working with a college or university population or with emerging adults. Experience incorporating diversity, equity, and inclusion into all aspects of advocacy and health promotion work. Certification in campus advocacy, sexual violence, or related topic. Experience with communication/education methods, including social media, web-based communication, presentations, and/or workshops.
Brief Description Of Duties
As part of the Center for Prevention and Outreach (CPO) team, the Coordinator of Survivor Advocacy and Support will serve as Stony Brook University’s campus victim/survivor advocate, working to educate, empower and connect the Stony Brook University community around health and wellness, with a special focus on supporting and advocating for survivors of interpersonal and gender-based violence including sexual assault and domestic violence.
The incumbent plays a crucial role as a team member within the overall campus health and wellness departments. In this capacity, they collaborate with colleagues across various units to enhance the effectiveness and integration of health, wellness, and prevention services. This includes actively participating in divisional meetings, sharing insights, and contributing to collaborative decision-making processes. The incumbent fosters a cooperative and supportive environment, ensuring seamless teamwork and alignment with the shared goals and objectives of campus health and wellness initiatives. This position may be required to provide support in other areas of student health, wellness, and prevention services, as needed.
The incumbent will bring high energy, positivity, resourcefulness, adaptability, communication and interpersonal skills, a growth mindset and student-centered philosophy to our work with diverse college students. The candidate must thrive as part of a fast-paced, continuous motion team that strives for personal best every day.
This position is based on Stony Brook University’s main (West) campus but will require occasional work/travel to the East (hospital) and Southampton campuses as the position serves all Stony Brook students. Travel to regional, state or national professional development opportunities and/or training may also be required at times.
Individual Survivor Advocacy And Support
This is a full-time appointment. FLSA Exempt position, not eligible for the overtime provisions of the FLSA. Minimum salary threshold must be met to maintain FLSA exemption.
In addition to the employee's base salary, this position is eligible for $3,400 UUP annual location pay, paid biweekly.
Essential Position: This has been designated as an essential position based on the duties of the job and the functions performed. Positions that are designated as such may be required to report to work/remain at work even if classes are canceled, and the campus is working on limited operations in an emergency.

Individual Survivor Advocacy And Support
- Provide high quality comprehensive confidential services and referrals to on and off campus agencies to student victims/survivors of sexual violence. Including but not limited to crisis support, connection to mental and physical health resources, and reporting options.
- Manage cases and consult with supervisors to escalate concerns as needed.
- Serve in after-hours rotation to support students seeking SANE services.
- Maintain timely and accurate documentation after contact with students. Prepare reports for senior leadership and participate in maintaining university compliance with reporting standards and requirements.
- Create educational resources and other materials to help survivor’s recovery, including but not limited to skill-based worksheets and resource cards.
- Develop and implement trauma-informed, psychoeducational support groups engaging students in building healthy coping skills, empowering them to reclaim their strength, and facilitating personal growth. This will include but is not limited to coping and connections.
- Support the training of peer educators and student assistants to lead supportive spaces for survivors.
- Liaise with off-campus partners to expand the safety net / network of care for survivors on campus including connection to direct community resources and services and promotion of partners on campus via education and outreach opportunities.
- Organize and oversee SBU’s Sexual Assault Response Team (SART), a multidisciplinary team of both university and community representatives dedicated to providing support and services to survivors; conduct Sexual Assault Response Team meetings and identify in-service learning/training opportunities.
- Curate calendar of events for awareness/advocacy months, i.e. Suicide Prevention Month, Sexual Assault Awareness Month, Domestic Violence Awareness Month, and Alcohol Awareness Month.
- Assist with delivering all CPO Bystander Trainings including but not limited to Green Dot, QPR, Red Watch Band, Narcan and CPR.
- Deliver workshops and presentations for student clubs, organizations, and faculty/staff on survivor advocacy services and support resources.
- General support for departmental education and outreach including but not limited to responding to event requests, screening days, and orientation/opening.
- Participates in opportunities that promote their learning, growth, and development (i.e., classes, training, committees, webinars).
- Contributes to the Division of Student Affairs and Stony Brook University by attending and/or supporting events, activities, and programs sponsored by areas within and outside the Office of Student Life (i.e., campus-wide traditions, events, programs).
- Other duties or projects as assigned as appropriate to rank and departmental mission.
- Evening and weekend work will be required at times.
