Required Qualifications (as evidenced by an attached resume):
Bachelor’s degree (foreign equivalent or higher). Two (2) years of competitive esports experience (as a coach or manager) in League of Legends, Overwatch, Rocket League, Valorant, or other multiplayer online video games with team-based elements. Experience with team management and/or recruitment efforts in esports. Must have, keep and maintain the appropriate valid NYS Driver’s License; have a motor vehicle record which is free from major violations or a pattern of repeat violations. Preferred Qualifications:
Previous collegiate or professional experience working in esports. Experience teaching, analyzing player strengths and weaknesses, and/or creating competitive Esports strategies at the collegiate level.

Brief Description of Duties:
The Esports Competition Manager will be responsible for overseeing the competitive structure of Stony Brook University’s Esports program. This individual will focus on scouting, assisting in recruitment conversations with the Assistant Director of Esports, managing player registrations, eligibility, and competition/practice schedules. Additionally, the Esports Competition Manager will play a vital role in engaging new students at the beginning of each academic year and facilitating intercollegiate competition through tournament hosting. The position will also be responsible for the management of competition broadcasts, ensuring high-quality production and engagement for streamed events.
The incumbent plays a crucial role as a team member within Student Health, Wellness & Prevention Services. In this capacity, they will collaborate with other team members to collectively contribute to the overall functioning and effectiveness of the services provided. This involves actively participating in team meetings, sharing insights, and engaging in collaborative decision-making processes. The incumbent's role extends to fostering a cooperative and supportive atmosphere, ensuring seamless teamwork, and collectively working towards the common goals and objectives of Student Health, Wellness & Prevention Services.
The ideal incumbent will have a strong understanding of competitive esports landscapes, including game mechanics, strategies, and player development. Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal. Ability to analyze player strengths and weaknesses to develop effective training programs. Experience working with esports hardware, software, and streaming technology. Strong leadership, coordination, and motivational skills. Ability to work collaboratively with university staff, students, and external partners. Knowledge of esports broadcasting, including streaming software (OBS, vMix), overlays, and live production techniques.

Competition & Recruitment:

  • Develop, oversee, and manage Stony Brook University Esports teams to ensure their competitive success.
  • Assist the Assistant Director of Esports in identifying and recruiting prospective esports student-athletes.
  • Evaluate potential esports players and advise on scholarship distributions.
  • Organize and facilitate tryouts, ensuring fair and comprehensive evaluations of all candidates.
  • Track and ensure compliance with eligibility requirements for all players.

Scheduling & Event Management:

  • Manage player registration, team rosters, and practice schedules.
  • Coordinate intercollegiate competition schedules, ensuring teams participate in relevant leagues and tournaments.
  • Assist in the planning, organization, and execution of on-campus esports tournaments and events.
  • Manage competition broadcasts, ensuring high-quality production, professional commentary, and seamless streaming for competitive matches.

Student Engagement & Development:

  • Lead student engagement efforts at the beginning of each academic year to integrate new students into the esports program.
  • Develop mentorship programs to support student players academically and socially.
  • Assist with student orientation and esports-related recruitment events.
  • Maintain a supportive and inclusive environment for esports participants.

Administrative Duties:

  • Maintain accurate records of team performances, student eligibility, and player development.
  • Ensure compliance with university policies and external esports governing bodies.
  • Collaborate with Institutional Research to track and analyze esports program metrics.
  • Assist in the development and maintenance of partnerships and sponsorships related to the esports program.

Facility & Technology Management:

  • Ensure teams have access to the most modern gaming equipment and playing strategies.
  • Troubleshoot and maintain esports facility hardware and software.
  • Assist in maintaining and upgrading esports technology, including gaming PCs, networking, and streaming setups.
  • Oversee student employees working within the esports facility.
  • Assist with Campus Recreation Center facility operation and supervision, including opening and closing duties as needed.

Strategic and Committee Collaboration:

  • Maintain confidentiality of information related to students, supervisors, or other employees and contribute to a safe educational and working environment.
  • Collect and compile monthly and quarterly operational and statistical data as needed.
  • Support various aspects of recreational programming, including student orientation, Seawolves outdoor adventure program, weekend life programs, and departmental special events.

Professional Development and Committee Involvement:

  • Participate in opportunities that promote your learning, growth, and development (i.e. classes, training, committee, webinar, etc.).
  • Contribute to the Division of Student Affairs and Stony Brook University by attending and/or supporting events, activities, and programs sponsored by areas outside of your individual unit/department (i.e. campus wide traditions, events, programs, etc.).
  • Other duties or projects as assigned as appropriate to rank and departmental mission.
  • Hours outside the typical work schedule may be required at times. Weekend travel will be required.


Special Notes:
This is a full-time appointment. FLSA Exempt position, not eligible for the overtime provisions of the FLSA. Minimum salary threshold must be met to maintain FLSA exemption.

In addition to the employee's base salary, this position is eligible for $3,400 UUP annual location pay, paid biweekly.

Essential Position: This has been designated as an essential position based on the duties of the job and the functions performed. Positions that are designated as such may be required to report to work/remain at work even if classes are canceled, and the campus is working on limited operations in an emergency.

***Out-of-State Applicants: Please note as a condition of employment and in order for this position to be tendered, the successful incumbent will be required to provide evidence of a valid license and driving abstract from the state issuing the license within five business days of a conditional offer and must obtain a NYS driver's license within 30 days of start date.
