Required Qualifications (as evidenced by an attached resume):
Bachelor's Degree (foreign equivalent or higher) in Physics. Three (3) years of post-degree related full-time work experience. Experimental experience, including repair and maintenance of equipment, as well as design and performance of experiments. Strong computing skills, i.e. maintenance of computer systems, building and management of websites. Experience using any type of acquisition software such as LabView, MATLAB, QuickDAQ, DASYlab; Vernier Loggerpro.

Preferred Qualifications:
Master's degree (foreign equivalent or higher) in Physics or related field. Additional years of full-time related experience to include experience as a Graduate Student. Supervisory or management experience in an academic research laboratory environment.

Brief Description of Duties:
Assist in the maintenance and management of the instructional laboratories in Physics and Astronomy, with particular emphasis on senior instructional labs and studio and the distant learning labs. This is done in close collaboration with the Manager of Instructional Laboratories to whom the incumbent directly reports. Secondary supervisor is the Director of Physical Laboratories. Serves as backup for the Manager of instructional laboratories. The position is responsible for maintenance, repair, upgrade and support of all undergraduate physics and astronomy laboratory course equipment as well for the computer systems used in the lab environment.

  • Aid the manager of instructional laboratories to maintain and support lower division physics labs in addition to the lower division astronomy lab with respect to weekly set-up and dismantling. This position assists in managing a staff of undergraduate work/study students to provide logistical support for apparatus and equipment. The incumbent is responsible for repairing and upgrading undergraduate laboratory equipment and apparatus and equipment and, working with the supervisor, maintains all undergraduate and graduate computer systems.
  • Help manage the daily operations of the physics department upper division laboratories labs AST 443/517, PHY 335 and PHY 445/515, which shall include the following:
    • Maintenance, repair, calibration, and support of laboratory equipment.
    • Maintain and improve knowledge base on all senior lab experiments.
    • Assist faculty in the design, development and upgrade of upper division laboratory equipment.
  • Help to manage the studio introductory labs for PHY133 and PHY134. Key components are managing the Teaching Assistants (TA) assigned to these courses and serving as technical support for students for any questions related to the lab equipment and data acquisition software.
  • Consult with faculty and laboratory manager to assist with the design, development and fabrication of new lecture demonstration equipment to enhance the teaching of the physical sciences. The incumbent manages and expands computerized inventory control of all lecture demonstration equipment and apparatus.
  • Upgrade and maintain all department webpages related to the educational mission. This includes webpages related specifically to the instructional laboratories and the undergraduate program in particular.
  • Other duties or projects as assigned as appropriate to rank and departmental mission.

Special Notes:
This is a full-time appointment. FLSA Non Exempt position, eligible for the overtime provisions of the FLSA.

In addition to the employee's base salary, this position is eligible for $3,400 UUP annual location pay, paid biweekly.
