POSITION DESCRIPTION :
The Radiology Nursing Aide / Assistant works under the direct supervision of a Radiology Technologist / Registered Nurse. Performs specific care to assigned patients, transportation and providing bedside care. Observes patients for change of condition and communicates same. Assists in keeping patient and work area neat, clean and stocked. Promotes cooperation, a positive attitude and creates a safe environment for both patients and staff. Responsible for knowing and adhering to established hospital policies and procedures, including all aspects of safety. Possible rotation to cover off-sites as required.
Radiology Nursing Aide / Assistant will transport patients within the hospital from unit to unit, or modality, and aide the patient on and off the examination table / stretcher / bed. Transport / move medical related items-specimens, equipment, medical records, lab results and mail. Responsible to adhere to all safety precautions to maintain a safe environment. Maintains logs and / or documents in the patient record when a patient or medical related item arrives at the appropriate destination. Order supplies for imaging departments. Performs other related duties as assigned or requested. Must be able to answer phone and communicate between other departments and radiologist. Stock exam rooms and linens. Assist patients in ADL-including toileting and ambulatory.
Radiology Nursing Aide / Assistant, when assigned to MRI as the second staff member, is required to notify the MRI Technologist prior to leaving Zone 3.
RESPONSIBILITIES :
- Identifies patients using patient ID bracelet before performing care.
- Assists with admission, transfer and discharge routine.
- Aides patient onto the examination table / stretcher or bed with care and compassion.
- Takes temperatures, pulse and respirations in an accurate manner if required.
- Takes and records blood pressures in an accurate manner.
- Obtains routine specimens such as urine, stool, sputum, etc.; labels properly and delivers to proper place in timely manner.
- Physically handles patients with care at all stages to avoid pain and prevent injury.
- Displays good interpersonal skills.
- Applies ice caps and collars.
- Monitors (does not adjust) IV's for level of solution, rate of flow, infiltration, leakage or reactions and reports IV's to nursing personnel.
- Assists patients with bedpan, commode and to the bathroom.
- Positions patients using proper body mechanics.
- Reports pertinent change in patient condition to the Team Leader.
- Utilizes appropriate body substance isolation as required.
- Documents patient care, vital signs and I&O in an accurate manner.
- Follows infection control practices and procedures for safety of patients, co-workers, and self. Adheres to established BSI policies and procedures.
- Keeps work areas clean, is compliant with Infection Control Policies.
- Follows hospital hand washing policy-demonstrates appropriate hand washing.
- Disposes of sharps, medications, and medical waste in accordance with hospital policy.
- Possible exposure to blood, body fluids and ionizing radiation.
