Research Support Specialist - N.11


Required Qualifications (as evidenced by an attached resume):

Bachelor's degree (foreign equivalent or higher). Experience with mouse colony maintenance, genotyping, mouse husbandry and/or knowledge of basic mouse genetics. Experience with cell culture technique.


Preferred Qualifications:

Bachelor's (foreign equivalent or higher) in biology. Experience with complex mouse survival surgeries and tumor implantation. Experience with small animal ultrasound. Working experience with multiplex IHC/IF. Bioinformatics experience.


Brief Description of duties:

The Shields Lab at Stony Brook Medicine is seeking a research support specialist to assist the Principal Investigator and other laboratory personnel, including undergraduate and graduate students, postdocs and senior research scientists to lead advancements of research investigating the mechanisms of development and progression of pancreatic cancer. Our current focus is on an NIH-funded project investigating the role of G-protein regulated signaling in tumor metabolism and inflammation. We employ genetically engineered mouse models, complemented by a broad range of molecular, cell biology, histological, and omics methods. The ideal candidate will have Excellent written and verbal communication skills, excellent digital record keeping skills and strong organizational skills. The ideal candidate will also be willing to take directions, work independently and in teams.


Duties:

  • Assist with coordinating multiple complex experiments.
  • Under the direction of the PI, reviews results and revises protocols as necessary to ensure that project objectives are attained.
  • Conduct experiments; provide technical laboratory support, and/or animal handling to assist with experiments conducted.
  • Perform literature search, staying current in the field by reading and discussing the literature and experimental results with the supervisor and/or PI.
  • Collect data, record observations measurements and prepare reports for review of supervisor and or PI.
  • Assist with maintaining lab databases which may include ensuring that experiments are observed, and that data is collected and entered correctly.
  • Review and analyze data.
  • Create computer models, graphs, reports and summaries for use in publications, professional journals, and grant applications.
  • Assist with scientific papers for presentation and publication.
  • Under the direction of the PI, creates and maintains lab manuals regarding operating, safety, etc.
  • Order lab reagents and supplies for the laboratory.
  • Obtain sales quotes for lab equipment and supplies.
  • Under the direction of the PI, reviews and adjusts expenses to decrease costs.
  • Assist with the repair and maintenance of all lab equipment.
  • Ensure that lab supplies are ready and available when necessary.
  • Assist the PI with training lab EEs, students, residents and/or fellows.
  • Other duties as assigned.

The Research Foundation of SUNY is a private educational corporation. Employment is subject to the Research Foundation policies and procedures, sponsor guidelines and the availability of funding. FLSA Non-Exempt position, eligible for the overtime provisions of the FLSA.

The starting salary range (or hiring range) to be offered for this position is noted below, it represents SBU's good faith and reasonable estimate of the range of possible compensation at the time of posting.




Salary: $38,000-$45,000
