A Brief Overview
This Clinical Educator is a professional Respiratory Therapist with in-depth scientific knowledge, technical expertise, skill and competency that serves as a business partner and resource in the healthcare clinical simulation setting and supports clinical development and ongoing training initiatives. This position participates in the development of clinical education and programs that facilitates forward movement in healthcare. Acts as a change agent by suggesting new or innovative approaches based on evidence-based clinical practices that result in improvements in quality outcomes. Actively collaborates in the entire orientation/onboarding process. The delivery of professional nursing care at Stormont-Vail Health is guided by Jean Watson's Theory of Human Caring and the theory of Shared governance, both of which are congruent with the mission, vision, and values of the organization.
Education Qualifications
- Bachelor's Degree Bachelor's of Science in a related field. Required
Licenses and Certifications
- Respiratory Therapist - KSBHA Required
- Must possess or obtain in the first 60 days valid basic life support (BLS) and Advanced Life Support (ALS) and Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) certification.
- Certified Respiratory Therapist - NBRC Preferred
- Certified Healthcare Simulation Educator by SSIH preferred obtained within 3 years of hire.
Experience Qualifications
- 5 years Experience as a Respiratory Therapist. Required
- less than 1 year NICU experience. Required
- less than 1 year Experience precepting or mentoring nursing staff (e.g. RT, RN, LPN, PCT's). Required
- Adult/Pediatric critical care experience. Preferred
- Experience utilizing EPIC. Preferred
- Experience in simulation-based education and training, evaluation of outcomes, patient safety, and implementation of innovative simulation-based education and training programs necessary, or an equivalent combination of training. Experience developing and delivering training to clinical staff. Preferred
Skills and Abilities
- Ability to effectively communicate with and provide education for individuals and groups. (Required proficiency)

- Maintain current knowledge of trends in area of expertise. (Required proficiency)
- Demonstrates knowledge of the Kansas State Nurse Practice Act and follows the statutes and regulations therein. (Required proficiency)
- Demonstrate didactic and clinical knowledge and skills equivalent to that of a respiratory therapist and will demonstrate the ability to teach this knowledge and skills to others; provide respiratory therapy care related education to departments as requested. (Required proficiency)

What you will do
- Responsible for planning, organizing, staffing and directing functions to ensure the development and education of the Respiratory staff in all settings, including the NICU and PICU. Provides instruction according to defined course outline, utilizing principles of education appropriate to needs and age of the target population. Identifies follow-up needs of participants and facilitates meeting those needs.
- Implement, facilitate, and debrief simulation-based learning and assessment activities to promote critical thinking. Designs, implements, and evaluates evidence-based simulation scenarios, curricula and experiences to address clinical and organizational performance gaps, improve learning approaches and provide optimal patient outcomes.
- Facilitates the development of simulation-based education programs in collaboration with key content experts ensuring adherence to evidence-based education practices. Develops plans, presents educational activities within areas of expertise, and directly or indirectly fosters the development of competence in the learner.
- Ensures that educational activities are congruent with the organization’s mission, vision and goals. Evaluates outcomes of educational endeavors and tracks learner outcomes in line with evidence-based practice.
- Participates in orientation and ongoing educational needs as a presenter and content designer.
- Incorporates regulatory accreditation requirements into improvement projects.
- Manage multiple projects concurrently, maintaining details and meeting deadlines.
- Works with intra-or interdisciplinary teams, brainstorms and problem solves and participates in educational strategic planning. Respiratory Therapy representative educational seminars involving multidisciplinary departments.
- Takes action to stay abreast of current and evolving learning trends, instructional methods/techniques and emerging technologies.
- Design and continuously improve and adapt curriculum depending on educational needs
- Serve as a mentor to clinical staff, and identify growth opportunities and educational needs for practicing clinical staff.
- Assists with equipment loans and the maintenance of simulation equipment. Maintains technical proficiency with the operation, maintenance, support, trouble-shooting, and repair for equipment.
- Assists sim team with programming of simulation scenarios.
- Selects simulation modalities, locales, and/or technologies as appropriate for assessment activities.
- Participate in other teaching/simulation related activities as directed by department leadership.
