As a Health Information Management Lead Medical Coder, you will:
- Analyze medical information from medical records. Accurately codes diagnostic and procedural information in accordance with national coding guidelines and appropriate reimbursement requirements.
- Consult with medical providers to clarify missing or inadequate record information and to determine appropriate diagnostic and procedure codes.
- Assist with the day-to-day oversight of coding staff.
- Abstract clinical diagnoses, procedure codes and documents other pertinent information obtained from the medical record into the electronic medical records. Seeks out missing information and creates complete records, including items such as disease and procedure codes, point of origin code, discharge disposition, date of surgery, attending physician, consulting physicians, surgeons and anesthesiologists, and appropriate signatures/authorizations.
- Refer inconsistent patient treatment information/documentation to the Director of Health Information Management or individual department for clarification/additional information for accurate code assignment.
- Monitor coding work queues, including deployment of coders to areas of greatest need.
- Trains staff on Electronic Medical Record (EMR) system. Annual reviews of staff using Epic. Responsible for EMR updates and training staff on updates.
- Assist Director with reviewing policies and guidelines in medical records department.
- Maintain effective communication with Health Information Management department staff and all other Story Medical departments.
- Effectively handle multiple projects and special assignments and other duties as assigned.
- Maintain strict confidentiality of patient, resident, and personnel information.

Required Education, Experience, and Skills:
- High school diploma or equivalent required.
- Certification from an accredited Professional Coding Institution (AHIMA or AAPC). CCS, CPC, RHIT, RHIA
- 5 years of experience in Medical Coding
- Ability to work effectively with common office software, coding software, and abstracting systems.
- Excellent written/oral communication including presentation skills
- Adaptability to accept responsibility for the direction, control, or planning of an activity
- Evidence of the practice of a high level of confidentiality
- Skilled in oral and written communications
- Must have legal authorization to work in the United States
Preferred Education, Experience, and Skills:
- Post-secondary degree in Health Information Technology or related health care field preferred
- Certified Epic Trainer
- Specialty coding
- Rural Health Clinic RHC Coding certification and experience
