Position Summary
Reporting to the SJCP Facility Manager and working within the Operations Team, this is a permanent, hourly, year-round position, with both straight time and overtime pay rates. This is looking to be filled as soon as possible.
SJCP operates the 62-acre Retreat and Leadership Center (RLC) near Leona, Texas about 100 miles north of Houston, TX. The facility has approximately 20 buildings that include a five-bedroom guesthouse, library, chapel, conference center, dining hall, maintenance building and 9 sleeping cabins. It hosts approximately thirty retreats and events per year that range between two and four days, usually on the weekends.
The RLC Maintenance Handyman will collaborate with other school departments to support the execution of the mission of the school through a variety of communications strategies and tools.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
- Responsible for execution and support of the daily operations and maintenance needs of the RLC
- Performing regular maintenance and repairs in areas such as carpentry, light electrical (i.e. light fixtures, switches), light mechanical (doors, locks, etc.), light plumbing (toilets, small valves, etc.), all of which will be recorded in FMX, SJCP’s Enterprise Asset Management Software
- Assist in support of SJCP Retreats and other events at the RLC
- Assure good housekeeping throughout RLC
- Manage regular work order requests from faculty and staff, ensuring all are completed quickly and efficiently
- Maintain RLC inventory of supplies, materials and equipment needed for maintenance and operations
- Maintain RLC inventory of necessary tools, equipment, furniture, and supplies for effective and efficient work execution
- Conduct routine QA/QC inspections of contracted maintenance and other services
- Advises and/or responds to emergencies on a 24-hour basis as needed
Minimum Qualifications (Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities)
- High school (or equivalent) is preferred
- Five or more years of professional experience in grounds keeping or related field required
- Experience in non-profit or education sector, especially in maintenance or operations, is preferred
- Deep understanding of and respect for Strake Jesuit’s mission of educating young men in the tradition of the Society of Jesus
- General maintenance skills, including: basic mechanical, light electrical and HVAC, carpentry, painting
- Experience with road and fence maintenance and dirt work
- Proven experience in working with a collaborative team
- A self-starter with the ability to initiate and follow through on assignments
- Ability to manage multiple concurrent issues and projects and effectively communicate the nature of issues, related plans and their status.
- Familiarity with work order systems or demonstrate an ability and willingness to learn
- Ability to walk, stand, maintain balance, climb ladders, crouch, lift up to 50 pounds, bend, stoop, and reach above shoulder level
- Ability to withstand inside and outside environmental conditions
- Ability to deal with moderate levels of stress related to time constraints and hazards of the job
