Loss Prevention Officer

Strand Bookstore is looking to grow its in-store security team by adding an additional Loss Prevention Officer at our flagship location in Union Square. Occupying 4 floors of 828 Broadway and having recently celebrated its 97th anniversary, Strand is a major destination for book lovers from around the world and New Yorkers alike. The size and scope of our store is unique amongst used bookstores and we are looking for an individual to assist in keeping our store’s inventory in top shape as well as help to ensure the safety and security of our staff and customers.

As our Loss Prevention Officer, you will conduct surveillance, apprehend and/or exclude shoplifters, investigate incidents and collaborate with store managers to implement security measures as needed.

Essential Functions:

• Conduct undercover surveillance to detect and prevent theft, fraud, vandalism or other criminal activities within the retail premises. The LP Specialist is expected to make regular rounds of the sales floor throughout business hours.
• Monitor in-store activities using cameras, observation and other techniques to identify suspicious behavior and potential security threats.
• Work closely with store management and other security personnel to investigate incidents of theft or misconduct and gather evidence to build case files.
• Maintain accurate records of security incidents, exclusions, and other relevant documentation. Prepare detailed reports for management review and legal purposes as required.
• Provide assistance and support to customers and employees regarding security concerns, lost items or other inquiries.
• Conduct thorough investigations into incidents of theft, fraud or misconduct within the store. Gather evidence, interview witnesses and collaborate with law enforcement when necessary.
• Participate in training sessions and awareness programs to educate store staff on security procedures, theft prevention techniques, and safety protocols.
• Stay informed about current trends and developments in retail crime and security practices to continuously improve loss prevention efforts
• Other duties, as necessary

Competency/Position Requirements:

• At least 2-3 years of experience in loss prevention, security, retail management or related field
• Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, as well as the ability to work effectively with a team and other departments
• Strong observation skills and an attention to detail
• Ability to remain calm and assertive in stressful situations
• Knowledge of relevant laws and regulations governing theft and security is expected for this position
• Proficiency in using surveillance equipment and security systems
• Ability to remain discreet and maintain integrity while handling sensitive information or interacting with suspects or law enforcement if needed
• Flexibility to work evenings, weekends and holidays as required

Physical Requirements:

• Standing and walking for extended periods of time
• Bending, kneeling and stooping as necessary
• Lifting and carrying heavy objects up to 50lbs or more
• Excellent physical agility to respond quickly to incidents or emergencies

Schedule:

Strand Bookstore is open 7 days a week, 10AM-9PM.

For this position, weekend shifts are required and it is expected that the person in this role will work until the store closes at 9:00PM, making most shifts 12:00PM-9:00PM, with a 1 hour unpaid lunch break.
