Job Title:         Paraprofessional – Special Education                          
Reports to:

Job Goal: The goal of this position is to assist Special Education teachers to meet the needs of our students. 

Essential Requirements:  To perform this job successfully an individual must be able to execute each requirement satisfactorily. The requirements list below are a representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability needed for the position.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities:

  1. Monitors and adjusts activities to meet district and position needs. 
  2. Works with individual students or small groups of students to reinforce learning of material or skills initially introduced by the teacher.
  3. Reads to students, listens to students read, and participate in other forms of oral communication with students. 
  4. Helps students master equipment or instructional materials assigned by the teacher. 
  5. Assists the teacher in devising special strategies for reinforcing material or skills based on a sympathetic understanding of individual students, their needs, interests, and abilities. 
  6. Guides independent student, enrichment work, and remedial work set up and assigned by the teacher. 
  7. Distributes and collects workbooks, papers, and other materials for instruction. 
  8. Assists with such large group activities as drill work, reading aloud, and storytelling (Elementary level).
  9. Alerts the certified teacher to any problems or special information about an individual student. 
  10. Maintains the same high level of ethical behavior and confidentiality of information about students as is expected of fully licensed teachers. 
  11. Assists with the supervision of students during emergency drills, assemblies, play periods, and field trips. 
  12. Participates in in-service training programs, as assigned. 
  13. Assists with lunch, snack, and cleanup routines. 
  14. Assists with wash-up and toilet routines. 
  15. Helps students with their clothing (high needs or Elementary only).
    1. Assist with toileting, including diapering and personal hygiene care (high needs or Elementary only).
  16. Operates and cares for equipment used in the classrooms for instructional purposes. 
  17. Assures that all student records of any description and information regarding students and staff are treated as confidential.
  18. Responsible for the proper use and care of classroom books and office materials.
  19. Supervises students in classroom, playground, lunchroom and other areas
  20. Other duties as may be assigned as needed.  

 

Qualifications / Certificates, Licenses, Registrations, Bonding, and or Testing Required:

  1. Associates Degree, preferred or must be able to become Highly Qualified through a national or local academic assessment to meet the Colorado department of education requirements to ensure compliance with ESSA.

Physical Demands: Between sitting, standing, and walking throughout the day lifting up to 50 pounds on an occasional basis and 10 pounds on a frequent basis, occasionally stooping, kneeling, crouching, overhead reaching and fine motor activity, frequently sitting, standing, walking, balancing, reaching at desk and floor level, firm and simple grasping. The work requires constant seeing, hearing, and talking.

Work Environment: Work is performed in office, classroom and/or other educational setting.

FLSA Status: Non-exempt

Days / Terms of Employment: 169 Days / Nine-month position. Salary to be determined by the School Board of Education.
