Job Description:
The Summer School Nurse helps maintain and/or improve the health status of students through the coordination of a comprehensive student health program which enables students to profit fully from their educational experiences during the summer school session.
- Provide basic healthcare to students and staff in case of injury or acute illness and create an online record of all visits.
- Notify parents and building administrators regarding children who are severely ill or injured.
- Administer medications to students, as per school policy.
- Ensure that the school complies with all state mandates for immunizations and physicals.
- Confirm that the school environment is safe for children and school staff (e.g., prevention of communicable diseases). Immediately report any safety hazards or unsanitary conditions observed in the school environment to the Director of Facilities or the Head of School.
- Complete school accident reports, as needed and monitor the Student Injury Log.
- Maintain confidential staff medical and emergency information.
- Order and maintain all supplies and over the counter medication for the health service program.
- Chaperone summer field trips or extracurricular activities.
- Other responsibilities, as needed.
- Maintain health plans for students with chronic illnesses and counsel with teachers, students, and parents concerning children's individual health difficulties, as needed.
- Support the school’s mission to provide a safe and caring learning environment that celebrates students’ strengths, builds self-esteem, and develops self-advocacy.
- Contribute positively to the overall learning environment in the school.
Qualifications:
- Registered nurse (RN) or Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) certification required.
- Current nursing license required.
- Experience working with school-age children preferred.
- Strong oral and written communication skills. Demonstrate the ability to remain calm and professional in an environment with frequent interruption.
- Must demonstrate competency with basic word processing, spreadsheet, and various internet applications.
- Ability to communicate effectively with all constituents in a school environment.
- Ability to exercise good judgment while working in a dynamic environment.
- The ability to be flexible and work well with a team.
