Purpose: The Sawmill Utility Worker always ensures a clean production area, to maintain a safe environment for production workers and maximize production capability. The Sawmill Utility Worker also performs tooling changes to assist Millwrights with change-overs. The Sawmill Utility Worker will learn fire-watch procedures and techniques in support of our maintenance department. The Sawmill Utility Worker is an integral member of the Stratton Lumber safety team and will always adhere to safety protocols, while reporting conditions that may be of concern.
Position Reports to: Sawmill Manager and/or Sawmill Night Supervisor
Position is Full-Time, Year-Round, Non-Exempt
44 hours per week
Essential Responsibilities
· Continually maintain a production area that is free of debris and hazards
· Prompt attention to tooling change-overs at end of shift, in preparation for the next shift
· Observe and follow all safety protocols at all times.
· Arrive to work on-time, daily, prepared for the day’s work
· Will use diligence with Fire Watch duties to prevent any possible fires
· Other duties as assigned.
Equipment and Machinery
· Will become familiar with the safe operation of the equipment and machinery associated with the mill.
· Will make use of all safety guards and implements that are associated with equipment, machinery and the facility.
· Will use proper Lock-out/Tag-out Procedures 100% of the time to avoid injuries or harm to equipment.
Working Conditions
· Indoors and outdoors
· Not air-conditioned in mill; air conditioned in break rooms
· Sawdusty atmosphere
· Loud noise
· Working around potentially hazardous materials and machinery
Essential Requirements
· Proven reliability
· Basic knowledge of machinery and tools
· Desire to safely work to enhance production processes
· Ability to follow established procedures and practices
· A strong commitment to all health and safety guidelines
· Very good communication skills
· Physically able to lift up to 50 lbs floor to waist; 40 lbs waist to shoulders; twist, reach away from body, push, pull, grip, repetitive lifting and bend. Ability to stand for long periods of time (10-11 hour shift).
· Satisfactory results for pre-employment physical and drug screening.
