Overview

The Maintenance Manager is responsible for overseeing the maintenance, repair, and optimization of production equipment in a custom sign manufacturing environment. This role focuses on ensuring that machinery, tools, and systems—such as large-format digital printers, CNC routers, thermoforming equipment, vinyl application stations, and paint booths—operate safely, efficiently, and reliably. While some responsibility for basic building and facilities maintenance exists, the primary emphasis is on equipment performance and continuous improvement. The Maintenance Manager leads local maintenance, establishes preventive maintenance protocols, and collaborates with production teams to support seamless and cost-effective operations.

Responsibilities

Equipment & Machinery Maintenance

  • Oversee the maintenance, troubleshooting, and repair of production equipment, including large-format printers, CNC routers, thermoforming machines, and related specialty fabrication tools.
  • Develop and implement preventive maintenance schedules to reduce downtime and extend equipment lifespan.
  • Quickly diagnose mechanical, electrical, and operational issues, coordinating corrective actions to minimize production interruptions.
  • Maintain detailed records of maintenance activities, parts usage, and repair work to support data-driven decision-making.

Team Leadership & Development

  • Lead, train, and support a team of maintenance technicians, fostering a safe, efficient, and high-performing work environment.
  • Assign work orders, prioritize tasks, and monitor progress to ensure timely completion.
  • Provide guidance, feedback, and coaching to improve technical skills and productivity.
  • Identify training opportunities and recommend professional development to enhance team capabilities.

Continuous Improvement & Process Optimization

  • Partner with Production Managers and Department Leads to identify opportunities for improving equipment performance and reliability.
  • Implement best practices and update Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) related to maintenance tasks and safety protocols.
  • Collaborate with vendors, service providers, and equipment manufacturers to stay current with new technologies, components, and maintenance techniques.

Basic Facilities & Building Systems

  • Address minor building-related maintenance needs as required (e.g., light repairs, coordinating occasional HVAC or electrical service calls).
  • Ensure compliance with basic safety and environmental regulations within the manufacturing space.

Budgeting & Inventory Control

  • Manage the maintenance budget, seeking cost efficiencies in parts, materials, and services.
  • Maintain an inventory of critical spare parts and tools, ensuring availability to prevent unexpected downtime.

Emergency Preparedness & On-Call Support

  • Develop and maintain basic emergency response plans for maintenance-related issues.
  • Be available to respond to urgent maintenance needs to minimize production disruptions.

Qualifications

Skills

  • Strong mechanical and electrical aptitude, with hands-on experience maintaining production equipment.
  • Familiarity with maintenance management software and the ability to leverage data for decision-making.
  • Excellent leadership, communication, and organizational skills.
  • Ability to work in a dynamic, fast-paced production environment and make quick, accurate decisions.

Education, experience, certifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Engineering, Maintenance Management, or a related field preferred.
  • Minimum 3 years of experience in maintenance management within a manufacturing environment, preferably involving custom or specialized production equipment.
  • Relevant certifications (e.g., in maintenance, electrical, or mechanical fields) are a plus.

Physical and mental demands

  • Frequent movement between shop floor and office areas.
  • Ability to lift, climb, and work in varying conditions around manufacturing equipment.
  • Comfortable working in hot, noisy, or confined spaces as needed.
  • Based in a custom sign manufacturing facility with exposure to machinery, tools, and materials.
  • Use of PPE may be required.
