Site Safety & Health Officer


Exciting opportunity to join our team constructing a new water pipeline in the breathtaking Grand Canyon, Arizona. We are looking for an  experienced Site Safety & Health Officer to help support our growth. This position offers competitive compensation, excellent benefits, including lodging and meals provided, with an 8 days on, 6 days off work schedule.


Job Description


Summary

Under direction of the Director of General Construction Business Operations the Site Safety & Health Officer is responsible for maintaining a safe work environment by ensuring all state and federal, as well as Stronghold Engineering, Inc.’s safety regulations are consistently followed. The Site Safety & Health Officers works closely with the Corporate Safety Officer and the site-specific Project Manager and Superintendent for each project to which they are assigned.


Essential Duties and Responsibilities


Essential duties are those that an individual must be able to perform with or without reasonable accommodation.

  • Ensures existence and awareness of suitable and relevant health and safety policies.
  • Responsible for maintaining a safe workplace without risk to health.
  • Responsible for overseeing the safe movement, storage and use of articles and substances.
  • Responsible for ensuring adequate provision of first-aid and welfare facilities and support.
  • Ensures the provision of suitable and current information and supervision concerning health and safety policies and practices.
  • Responsible for proper and timely assessment of risks to health and safety, and implementation of measures and arrangements identified as necessary from the assessments.
  • Responsible for the ensuring the provision of emergency procedures, first-aid facilities, safety signs, protective clothing and equipment and incident reporting to the relevant authorities.
  • Acts as a liaison as necessary with other organizations and relevant authorities, and provides assistance and cooperation concerning audits and remedial actions.
  • Responsible for ensuring the workplace satisfies health, safety and welfare requirements for ventilation, temperature, lighting, sanitary, washing and rest facilities.
  • Ensures prevention and precautions against, or adequate control of, exposure to hazardous substances, and danger from flammable, explosive, electrical, noise, radiation and manual handling risks.
  • Responsible for surveillance and reporting on health and safety practices and systems.
  • Presents self in a professional manner, provides open and honest communication, and demonstrates respect to co-workers and customers.                                
  • Prepares special reports and correspondence as requested by Safety and Project Manager.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.

Qualifications

Education / Certificates / Licenses 

The following certification must be provided to be considered for the position:

  • 30 hour OSHA,
  • 40 hour EM385-1-1
  • An average of at least 24 hours of formal safety training each year for the past 5 years with training for competent person in at least 4 of the following (Excavation, Scaffolding, Fall Protection, Hazardous Energy, confined Space, Health Hazard recognition, physical and biological agents)
  • CSP (Certified Safety Professional) or CIH (Certified Industrial Hygienist) certification
  • ECATTS
  • RCRA Hazardous Waste Management or equivalent training (min 24 hours)
  • DOT Transportation of Hazardous Materials Training 

     Experience

    • Minimum of 10 years of construction safety experience.
    • CSP or CIH Certification required
    • Army Corps of Engineers and EM385-1-1 40 hr. training course
    • RFA 213 & 214 safety knowledge and experience required.
    • Working knowledge with Army Corps of Engineers and EM385-1-1.

     Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

    • Ability to evaluate Superintendents and subcontractors on safety and health performance.
    • Able to work in a productive manner independently and with others in a team environment.
    • Ability to travel, if necessary
    • Excellent computer skills and proficient knowledge of Word, Excel, Outlook, MS Project and tool tracking software programs.
    • Able to communicate effectively verbally and in a written form.
    • Ability to identify and resolve problems in a timely manner.
    • Ability to add, subtract, multiply and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions and decimals. Ability to computer rate, ratio and percentage and to draw and interpret bar graphs.
    • Ability to read and interpret documents, such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions and procedures manuals.

     Working Conditions

    • Depending upon the need of the position, work locations could be inside an office environment or directly on-site at a construction project location.
    • Depending on the project, employee can be exposed to work near moving mechanical parts, extreme cold, and extreme heat.

     Physical Demands

    • Regularly required to sit; use hands to finger, handle or feel; reach with hands and arms; and talk and hear.
    • Frequently required to stand and walk.
    • Must be able to regularly lift and/or move up to 10 pounds and frequently lift and/or move up to 25 pounds.
    • Climb ladders and scaffolds 6ft or greater
    • Work at elevated height 6 feet or greater.
