General Summary
Under the direction of the director, Governmental Relations, review proposed retirement legislation and advocate on behalf of State Teachers Retirement System of Ohio (STRS Ohio) with federal and state legislators their committee members and staff. Act as liaison between Governmental Relations and all other departments of STRS Ohio.
Summary Of Responsibilities
- Support the director, Governmental Relations in the development of legislative initiatives as approved by the STRS Ohio Retirement Board.
- Build and maintain relationships with policymakers and government officials.
- Advocate in support of the STRS Ohio position on legislation, administrative rules or regulations. Contact and confer with members of Congress and the Ohio General Assembly and other public officeholders.
- Monitor and analyze legislative proposals, not initiated by the system, assess their impact to STRS Ohio and advise leadership on strategic responses.
- Prepare legislative proposals, testimony, analyses, information materials and testify at public hearings.
Summary Of Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree required. Degree in education, business administration, journalism, public relations, political science, government, law or communications preferred.
- Two years’ experience in a community relations or legislative environment required.
- Ability to identify risks and opportunities in the legislative environment and develop solutions required/preferred.
- Superior oral and written communication skills required.
- Excellent organizational skills and a high degree of accuracy and attention to detail required.
