Job Summary
We are seeking a dedicated and skilled Construction Laborer to join our team. The ideal candidate will have experience in various aspects of bridge construction work, including heavy equipment operation and site preparation. This role requires physical stamina, attention to detail, and the ability to work collaboratively on construction sites.
*Must have previous bridge construction experience. Any experience with Post Tension will be given priority.*
Responsibilities
- Be the liaison with the NY State Thruway Authority (NYSTA) on daily operations, coordinating all work with them.
- Coordinate the efforts of the crew, including 2 union structural ironworkers, one other Structural Technologies technician, and possibly a project engineer.
- Enter time and keep a daily log of activities (may be done by the project engineer).
- Communicate frequently with the Project Manager on status, production, planning, and quality control.
- Monitor the quality and production of the other technician on the other end of the traveler.
- Ensure appropriate PPE, especially fall protection, is used at all times.
- Troubleshoot any equipment issues, including those involving the 480v power provided by the traveler generator and the electric hydraulic power unit (HPU).
- Assemble and install work platforms to access work.
- Coordinate moving equipment on and off the travelers, which may require off-hour loading/unloading.
Field Work Operations:
- Operate a mobile cutting machine similar to a lathe to cut grooves in steel anchorages (training will be provided).
- Set up the cutting machine on each anchorage and position it to a high level of accuracy.
- Perform machining operations to cut grooves in the anchorage with tolerances in the 1/1000 inch range, using dial indicators.
- Maintain proper lubrication of the cutting head at all times.
- Monitor cutting operations for quality cutting, adequate lubrication, optimal rotation speed, and feed rate of the cutting head.
- Learn and understand the effects of cutting speed and feed rate on the performance of the cutting machine and the work.
- Ensure all cutting oil drippings and steel chips are collected in the containment bin and disposed of daily.
- Document the finished results and perform final QC checks at each location.
- Install protective wax tape over newly machined grooves before moving to the next location.
- Maintain a high level of control over all small parts such as mounting bolts, cutting inserts, and tools to prevent loss, especially since the work location is over water.
- Understand that the work is performed on a live structure, and precision is critical to avoid errors.
- Ensure organization on the traveler to prevent loss of equipment or tools and maintain a safe and uncluttered work area.
Ideal Candidate Attributes:
- Extensive Experience: Proven experience in a machine shop or with machining equipment, with a strong understanding of machining processes.
- Bridge Construction Experience: Previous experience in bridge construction projects is a key component.
- Hands-On Skills: Exceptional hands-on skills, with the ability to feel when the cutting feed is right on the lathe.
- Leadership: Demonstrated leadership experience in a construction or similar environment, with the ability to manage and motivate a team.
- Problem-Solving: Strong problem-solving skills and attention to detail, with the ability to make quick and effective decisions on-site.
- Team Player: Ability to work effectively in a team and manage multiple tasks simultaneously.
- Communication: Excellent communication skills, with the ability to coordinate with project managers and other stakeholders.
- Adaptability: Ability to work in mildly inclement weather conditions and access work areas by climbing ladders and through hatches.
