Position Overview: Structural Technologies VSL is seeking a highly skilled and experienced Field Supervisor to join our team for a new bridge construction project in Tarrytown, NY. The ideal candidate will have a strong background in machining and construction, with the ability to lead and manage a construction crew on-site. This role requires a hands-on leader who can ensure precision and quality in all tasks, particularly those involving machining equipment.
Key Responsibilities:
- Lead and manage the construction crew on-site.
- Operate a mobile cutting machine similar to a lathe to cut grooves in steel anchorages.
- Set up the cutting machine on each anchorage and position to a high level of accuracy.
- Perform machining operations to cut grooves in the anchorage with tolerances in the 1/1000 inch range.
- Maintain proper lubrication of the cutting head and monitor cutting operations for quality, lubrication, rotation speed, and feed rate.
- Ensure all cutting oil drippings and steel chips are collected and disposed of daily.
- Document finished results and perform final QC checks at each location.
- Install protective wax tape over newly machined grooves.
- Coordinate with the NY State Thruway Authority (NYSTA) on daily operations.
- Coordinate the efforts of the crew, including 2 union structural ironworkers and one other Structural Technologies technician.
- Enter time and keep a daily log of activities.
- Communicate frequently with the Project Manager on status, production, planning, and quality control.
- Ensure appropriate PPE, especially fall protection, is used at all times.
- Troubleshoot equipment issues and coordinate moving equipment on and off the travelers.
- Assemble and install work platforms to access work.
- Ensure organization on the traveler to prevent loss of equipment or tools and maintain a safe work area.
Ideal Candidate Attributes:
- Extensive Experience: Proven experience in a machine shop or with machining equipment, with a strong understanding of machining processes.
- Hands-On Skills: Exceptional hands-on skills, with the ability to feel when the cutting feed is right on the lathe.
- Leadership: Demonstrated leadership experience in a construction or similar environment, with the ability to manage and motivate a team.
- Problem-Solving: Strong problem-solving skills and attention to detail, with the ability to make quick and effective decisions on-site.
- Team Player: Ability to work effectively in a team and manage multiple tasks simultaneously.
- Communication: Excellent communication skills, with the ability to coordinate with project managers and other stakeholders.
- Adaptability: Ability to work in mildly inclement weather conditions and access work areas by climbing ladders and through hatches.
