Title: Organizing & Event Coordinator

Status: Full-time regular, salary

Location: Ypsilanti and Detroit office (some remote work)

Classified: Exempt

Compensation: Starting salary for bachelor’s - $54,380

Starting salary for master’s - $58,879

Description

Student Advocacy Center is seeking an education justice leader passionate about community and youth organizing, developing leadership, providing supportive and flexible supervision, and activating community members into the work of building healthy and healing community schools. This position will be part of our leadership team, oversee our youth organizers, oversee agency-wide organizing strategy, and work to activate and engage donors, caregivers and community members into local and state actions that improve public schools for our families. The ideal candidate will be organized, relationship-focused, independent and have supervisory, organizing and event planning experience.

Qualifications:

  • College degree or higher, master’s preferred
  • Past experience supervising staff or interns preferred
  • At least 2 years of professional experience preferred in organizing, event planning and/or corporate sales.
  • Strong interpersonal and writing skills will be required
  • Highly organized, detail oriented, flexible and able to work independently
  • Commitment to the right to an education, advocacy, anti-oppressive action, trauma-responsive care, restorative practices and community-centered fundraising.
  • Proficient and accurate in Gmail, Google Calendar, Google Docs, Google Forms, Sheets, Google Slides or PowerPoint, and online databases. Experience with digital organizing tools such as Action Network preferred
  • Background check clearance, including ICHAT, national and state sex offender registry and Central Registry clearance
  • A valid Michigan driver’s license, reliable vehicle, driver’s record clearance and proof of insurance that meets SAC’s underwriting criteria

Scope of Services:

15-17 hours a week:

  • Provide reflective, therapeutic supervision to 2 youth organizers
  • Oversee program management for Youth Action Michigan in Detroit and Ypsilanti, including overseeing data tracking, evaluation, grant reporting, site visits, event planning support, program quality assurance, safety planning, logistical support, strategic support, etc.

8 hours a week:

  • Provide weekly check-in for part-time youth organizer in Detroit.
  • Provide push in support to supervisions with staff doing organizing work as needed
  • Lead weekly youth organizing team meeting and debrief.
  • Lead huddles and work sessions with staff doing organizing work.
  • Lead monthly Community Organizing Team Meetings.
  • Attend bi-weekly Leadership Team meetings and support .
  • Support co-creation and implementation of SAC’s organizing strategic plan and strategy chart.
  • Oversee updates to our Community Organizing Manual.
  • Provide leadership in a Michigan Education Justice Coalition committee (local school organizing committee).
  • Provide support, as needed, for staff to engage their students and families in community organizing interventions, through one on one meetings, attending team meetings as needed, developing tools for staff, and supporting training.

12 hours a week:

  • Conduct one on ones with community members and donors to engage them in our organizing work.
  • Conduct trainings for activated community members periodically and recruit community members to attend state coalition-sponsored trainings.
  • Facilitate monthly caregiver organizing meetings in Ypsilanti with support of Executive Director and support actions of caregivers (i.e. school board meeting public comment, petitions, one on ones with school board members, forums, annual advocacy day in Lansing)
  • Work with engaged community members to plan 6 small gatherings every year to develop their leadership, and engage more community members in our work.
  • Support event planning for our Detroit (fall) and Ypsilanti storytelling fundraisers (spring).
  • Securing wins that look like school board resolutions on school discipline, code of conduct revisions, school board policy changes, changes in school board decision-making processes, changes in district and/or state spending decisions, and/or state legislative changes.

2-4 hours a month

  • Support communication efforts, including sending out Action Network opportunities to the network.
  • Support activist and donor data management.

Personal Responsibilities:

  • Actively support the Student Advocacy Center’s mission, vision, values and principles of practice.
  • Uphold and ensure appropriate implementation of all agency policies and procedures.
  • Maintain utmost confidentiality and professionalism.
  • Maintain excellent work attendance.
