About us:
The Student Conservation Association (SCA) is the largest provider of hands-on environmental conservation programs for youth and adults. Program participants protect and restore national parks, national forests, wildlife refuges, marine sanctuaries, cultural landmarks, community green spaces, and much more across the country.
Position Description:
This internship will provide experiences with all aspects of wildlife habitat and ecosystem conservation in the famous Prairie Pothole Region. The position will assist the Morris Wetland Management District biologist and upland manager with various biological surveys and land management activities. There will be opportunities to job shadow other US Fish and Wildlife Service staff members and staff from partner organizations, and to assist with public use activities and volunteers. The participant may also work on an independently designed project of interest to them (e.g. design a monitoring protocol, develop an outreach activity).
Member Key Duties and Responsibilities
Primary duties will include prairie vegetation monitoring, invasive species control, wildlife surveys, and native prairie seed harvest. The member will also work on an independent project such as developing a monitoring protocol or an outreach activity.
Member Marginal Duties
Additional duties may include assisting with outreach activities, data entry, and general facilities management.
Member Required Qualifications
- Have a valid driver's license
- Be comfortable using herbicides (all necessary protective gear and training will be provided)
- Be capable of working outdoors in remote locations
Member Preferred Qualifications
- Capable of carrying 40 pounds
- Strong attention to detail
- Experience with trailers and driving ATVs/UTVs
Additional details related to intern housing
Ther is no refuge housing. SCA will lease housing for the intern. University of Minnesota Morris does have on campus apartments that would likely be available.

The member will spend most days working outdoors in remote areas. The willingness/ability to be outside, hiking across uneven terrain, in sometimes uncomfortable conditions, is important.
The member will need a personal vehicle to/from the office each day – our office is located about 5 miles outside the nearest town and there is no bike trail or public transportation available.
Member Benefits:
- Weekly Living Allowance $620.00 per week
- Week-long orientation, expenses paid
