Prince William Forest Park Youth Corps Member

Overview:

The SCA Intern will be responsible for coordinating the Youth Conservation Corps crew at Prince William Forest Park with assistance from Park staff. Youth Conservation Corps is a summer employment program for local young men and women (ages 15-18) who work, earn and learn together doing outdoor conservation projects. The majority of this work is performed outdoors where variable weather conditions will be encountered. The intern will potentially be exposed to insects, poison ivy, and snakes. Most tasks will require significant manual labor.

SCA Intern Dates: 6/02/25 - 8/22/25 (Dates are slightly flexible)

YCC Member Dates: 6/16/25 - 8/15/25 (tentative)

Project Duties:

  • Coordinating the Park's Youth Conservation Corps Program
  • Planning and implementing projects for the YCC enrollees
  • Providing technical guidance and direction in all phases of each field project to the YCC enrollees
  • Independently providing sufficient amount of detail to accomplish projects safely and efficiently
  • Operating a federally-owned or leased vehicle in order to transport enrollees and equipment

Your qualifications will be evaluated on the following competencies (knowledge, skills, abilities and other characteristics):

  • Knowledge of practical methods and techniques of counseling such as that acquired through experience gained as a monitor, leader, supervisor, or instructor of groups, especially youth groups, in order to guide and assist enrollees.
  • Ability to work with, and instruct enrollees, on the proper use of simple hand tools such as garden rake, shovel, axe, hammer, wire brush, etc., to work on field projects.
  • Ability to apply a practical understanding of the methods and techniques of conservation in order to lead enrollees in work activities or field projects
  • Skill in communicating with youth groups in order to convey natural and cultural resource preservation goals and provide an educational experience to youths who may not have had experience with these resource environments.

Project Work:

  • Boundary signs/posting along main roads
  • Repairs to Gates and Boardwalks
  • Replacing Picnic tables, fire rings and grills.
  • Painting and Staining
  • Cleaning of interpretive panels and kiosks.
  • Landscape Maintenance
  • Trail Maintenance
  • Organize educational programs and field trips
  • Replace and/or install fencing.
  • Minor historic building trades tasks
  • Other duties as assigned.

Members will work M-F during business hours. Intern will have evenings and weekends off.

Compensation:

  • $800 / week living allowance (pre-tax)
  • $1,100 one-time travel allowance (pre-tax)
  • Shared housing provided by NPS on site
