Independent Placement Program - Dispersed Recreation Placement at Arapaho National Recreation Area

Position Summary

1 SCA participant will work in conjunction with Recreation staff to Assist with patrolling of forest areas including assistance with public education for resource management purposes. Assist in Maintenance of forest improvements in developed and dispersed recreation sites. Constructs and/or maintains signs and gates. Assists in the maintenance of signs in developed sites and general forest areas including along roads. This work will involve extensive driving, but also hiking in variable weather conditions. The work will also require removal of fallen trees, rocks and saturated garbage. Special projects may range from gate installations/repair to sign construction, installation, and repair. No prior construction skills are needed for this, just an extra set of hands to help assemble and move components. This is an opportunity to see much of the Ranger District and get to know the lay of the land.

Key Duties and Responsibilities

Assist with patrolling of forest areas; Assistance with public education for resource management purposes; Assist in Maintenance of forest improvements in developed and dispersed recreation sites; Constructs and/or maintains signs and gates; Assists in the maintenance of signs in developed sites and general forest areas including along roads; Buck and rail fence construction; This work will involve extensive driving, but also hiking in variable weather conditions; The work will also require removal of fallen trees, rocks and saturated garbage; Special projects may range from gate installations/repair to sign construction, installation, and repair. No prior construction skills are needed for this, just an extra set of hands to help assemble and move components

Marginal Duties

May also work on other priority work including, trails and wilderness patrols or needs in the Arapaho National Recreation Area.

Required Qualifications

Valid Driver's License

This SCA Position is authorized under the Public Land Corps Authority. All participants must be between the ages of 16 and 30, inclusive, or veterans age 35 or younger. Participants must also be a citizen or national of the United States or lawful permanent resident alien of the United States. Hours served can be applied toward the Public Land Corps (PLC) hiring authority.

Living Accommodations

Partner will provide suitable housing for the member. Participants will share small government houses with other members or government employees. Houses consist of 2 or 3 small bedrooms with shared bathroom and kitchen facilities. Members will be assigned a house with other members or government employees of the same gender and each person shall have their own bedroom; The town of Grand Lake is 4 miles from the housing/work center. the town of Grand Lake has 2 small grocery stores, laundromat, a myriad of restaurants, live theater, marina, etc.; Access to Amenities By foot/bike; By car

Compensation

$1,100 - one time RT travel allowance $460 - weekly living allowance AmeriCorps eligible ($1,678 education award) Housing

All allowances are subject to applicable federal, state, and local taxes.
