The Student Conservation Association (SCA) is the largest provider of hands-on environmental conservation programs for youth and adults. Program participants protect and restore national parks, national forests, wildlife refuges, marine sanctuaries, cultural landmarks, community green spaces, and much more across the country.
Program Description:
The primary focus of this position within the Division of Interpretation is to provide exceptional interpretive and front-line visitor services at Camp Nelson National Monument (CANE). Interns play a vital role in helping visitors understand the mission and purpose of CANE. Responsibilities include, assisting with daily tours of the CANE grounds, by roaming the grounds and assisting visitors, staffing the visitor center, museum, and reconstructed barracks.
Additional duties may involve interpretive projects such as: writing articles for the Camp Nelson website and posts for the social media pages, assisting with inventory of museum artifacts and park property, organizing park library, designing program fliers and brochures, and creating exhibits for the visitor center and reconstructed barracks and traveling ranger on the road programs.
The primary goal of this project is to provide memorable and meaningful learning experiences, foster development of a personal stewardship ethic, and broaden public support for preserving CANE resources.
The primary objective of the intern's position is to provide high-quality interpretive services through contacts at the visitor information desk, formal and informal interpretive programs, and special event management assistance.
A secondary objective is to provide a diverse and educational experience to the candidates to strengthen their knowledge of the Agency and the work we do, while allowing them to see other career opportunities that are available.
Member benefits:
- Living allowance: $600.00 per week
- One-time Travel Allowance - $1,100
- AmeriCorps Award: $1,956.35

Additional:
- Must be eligible to serve as an AmeriCorps Member. This includes:
- Being a citizen, permanent resident, or national of the United States
- Being at least 18 years or older
- Having a high school diploma or equivalent
- Being willing to undergo National Service Criminal History Check, including criminal background, sex offender and FBI checks.
- The AmeriCorps Education Award available upon successful completion of this position is $1,956.35.
- All allowances subject to applicable federal, state, and local taxes.
It is SCA's policy that all AmeriCorps-required background checks must return cleared results prior to the position's start; this includes being fingerprinted for the FBI check. Otherwise, the AmeriCorps award will be removed, or the position's start date will be delayed due to non-compliance.
