Position Summary
The Medicine Wheel/ Medicine Mountain National Historic Landmark (The Wheel) is an active sacred Native site visited by ten-thousand people per summer from all around the world. Interpretive staff is responsible for educating the public about the site and its significance and safeguarding the resources. Successful candidates will possess superb interpersonal skills and a demonstrated interest in learning and conveying local history, culture and geology.

Key Duties and Responsibilities
- Selected candidates will provide interpretive and pertinent information to visitors including cultural and local history, flora and fauna, and answering questions
- Interpretive staff will document visitation and mange the flow of traffic
- When private ceremonies are held staff is responsible for maintaining said privacy from the public
- Daily cleaning of vault toilet facilities
Marginal Duties
- Staff may paint building exteriors or assist with minor projects
- Staff may have to herd cattle or contact the appropriate parties to do so
- May present formal or informal interpretive programs off site
- Render first aid or contact appropriate authorities to provide aid
- Document and provide information to forest patrol officers for suspected violations or concerns
- Attend annual monitoring meetings
Required Qualifications
- Interested applicants must be comfortable working at high elevation on an exposed mountain face
- Candidates should have a demonstrated experience in public speaking and interacting professionally with diverse audiences
- Applicants must be respectful of different cultural and religious practices and willing to learn about them
- Additional language skills are advantageous
Preferred Qualifications
- Those with a background in social sciences, general sciences, or history are strongly encouraged to apply
- Interested candidates should be familiar or comfortable with winter mountainous driving
Hours
40 per week
Living Accommodations
Housing will be provided at a ranger station on forest close to the work site in a rural and isolated location; housing includes beds (does not include bedding like sheets or pillows), kitchen essentials, laundry and shower facilities, and limited Wi-Fi; housing assignments are based on gender in a shared barracks facility; the closest grocery stores are a forty-five minute drive so a personal vehicle is strongly encouraged
Compensation
Living allowance - $400/week
To/ From Travel Allowance - $1,100
SCA Uniform
AmeriCorps Award Eligible - $1,956 at fulfillment of 450 service hours
All allowances are subject to applicable federal, state, and local taxes.
