Position Summary
The Urban Green Fellow will serve North Lake County Communities of Hammond, Whiting and East Chicago, by supporting local SCA urban forestry projects and community engagement. This fellowship will allow the unique experience of working closely with program staff, field crews and community leaders to plan, support and facilitate community events like Arbor Day celebrations, reporting, tree plantings and giveaways.

March 3, 2025 - September 27, 2025
Key Duties and Responsibilities
Represent the NWI Urban Green Program at SCA and other events;
Support and plan an arbor day celebration;
Plan and support a “Join the Crew” joint workday for local SCA teams;
Assist SCA's staff to build relationships with local community-based organizations and land management partners;
Build and maintain relationships with urban green alumni as directed;
Support SCA's efforts as requested in connecting urban green program alumni to member continuum as directed.
Support local SCA events as needed;
Support field-based teams and work alongside young adult crews;
Marginal Duties
Work with SCA staff to create content to share on Social media;
assist in creating member and leader resources;
build positive connections in the community;
Required Qualifications
Must be 21 years of age or older by position start date;
1-2 years prior experience in supervising young adults in an outdoor setting;
Have a working knowledge of safely operating hand tools;
Strong communication skills when working with various external and internal partners;
Strong organizational and time management skills with exceptional attention to detail;
Proven ability to multi-task and troubleshoot in a fast-paced environment;
Proven ability to handle confidential information with discretion, be adaptable to various competing demands, and demonstrate a high level of customer/client service and response;
Experience working with youth from racially and socioeconomically diverse backgrounds;
Demonstrated proactive approaches to problem-solving with strong decision-making capability;
Experience deescalating emotionally charged situations and discussing available options;
Highly resourceful team-player, with the ability to also be extremely effective independently;
Demonstrated ability to achieve high performance goals and meet deadlines;
Experience working in conservation and strong technical outdoor skills (experience as a former SCA Crew Leader is a plus);
Experience working with native and invasive plants;
Project management experience in a collaborative environment;
Experience managing a budget is a plus;
Preferred Qualifications
Alumnus of SCA programs.
Experience with digital media.
Experience working with Microsoft applications (Teams, Word, Excel, etc.)

40 per week

Compensation
$830 weekly stipend
All allowances are subject to applicable federal, state, and local taxes.
