Position Summary

The primary role of the candidate we hire will be that of assisting our post-fire weeds management specialist with their comprehensive survey of the Cameron Peak Wildfire footprint for non-native and invasive (i.e., weeds) plant species. The data they help collect will be analyzed, synthesized, and ultimately shared with our partner agency (Larimer County DNR, Weeds) who we have agreements with for them to treat said weeds. This work requires long days spent outside in the elements, hiking over uneven surfaces, exposed to sun. They will be trained to use geospatial data collecting programs and protocols to gather the desired data, etc.

Key Duties and Responsibilities

Go into the field daily; exposure to the elements; hiking over uneven surfaces; gathering data on non-native and invasive weed species first ocularly, then with geospatial collecting devises or app/programs on their phones. They will gather data on the following: location, site characteristics, non-native/invasive plant species encountered, infestation area or size, plant density, proximity to water, and any other data points their supervisor determines to be useful.

Marginal Duties

Must have a good attitude; must be a hard worker; must be willing to learn; must be willing to endure the elements; must be ok with many hours per day of being in a government vehicle (4-6 hrs. day depending on area to be surveyed or inventoried), though not actually required to drive.

Required Qualifications

Experience in working in the outdoors or, if lacks work experience, must be someone who enjoys spending time in the outdoors as this is the majority of what is expected. Some data collection and processing, possibly analysis, preferred, though not required. Needs to have personal outdoor gear (i.e., hiking boots, breathable synthetic layers, sun-shirt, sun hat, backpack w/ rain cover, rain jacket, warm or mid-layers, water reservoirs or canisters, water filtration device, headlamp, etc., or anything they may need and can reasonably carry within a backpack in the out of doors).

This SCA Position is authorized under the Public Land Corps Authority. All participants must be between the ages of 16 and 30, inclusive, or veterans age 35 or younger. Participants must also be a citizen or national of the United States or lawful permanent resident alien of the United States. Hours served can be applied toward the Public Land Corps (PLC) hiring authority.

Living Accommodations

There is housing available on the Canyon Lakes Ranger District, which is located at our administration site in Fort Collins off North College Avenue, 300 Hemlock. Candidate should have their own room but may possibly have a roommate. Shared bathrooms. Communal living room spaces and shared kitchens.

Compensation

  • $460/week @ 16wks
  • Government housing available or $400 monthly living allowance
  • $1,100 round trip travel allowance
  • AmeriCorps eligible ($1,956.35 education award) upon completion of 460 hrs
  • Paid Federal Holidays
  • Public Lands Corps PLC Eligible if under 30 and 35 for veterans

All allowances are subject to applicable federal, state, and local taxes.
