Position Summary The placement assists developed recreation staff on Mitkof Island within the Petersburg Ranger District, Tongass National Forest. Major duties consist of cleaning and minor maintenance of day and overnight-use developed recreation sites and toilets. Work is accomplished by day trip with the goal to provide clean and safe facilities for the local and visiting public.

The work may involve working with other Forest Service recreation personnel on brushing and minor reconstruction of trails, cleaning and minor maintenance on public recreation cabins, and/or conducting Wilderness Character Monitoring during day or overnight trips.

Travel to recreation sites may involve boats or float planes, as well as the possibility of hiking up to several miles a day in steep terrain and in inclement weather. Petersburg is in a temperate rainforest, and placements should expect to work in rain gear daily and camp for several days at a time in wet conditions.

Marginal Duties Opportunity to support other resources, such as cabins, trails, Wilderness, botany, archaeology, fisheries, timber, or wildlife.
Required Qualifications Driver's license
This SCA Position is authorized under the Public Land Corps Authority. All participants must be between the ages of 16 and 30, inclusive, or veterans age 35 or younger. Participants must also be a citizen or national of the United States or lawful permanent resident alien of the United States. Hours served can be applied toward the Public Land Corps (PLC) hiring authority.

Living Accommodations•The Forest Service bunkhouse is a shared living space for up to two people per room and available for the length of the placement's stay. During overnight trips, the placement should expect to stay in a remote Forest Service cabin in a potentially wet environment.
Compensation$450/week living allowance $1500 one-time roundtrip travel stipend $1900 reimbursable duty-related expenses ($400 for personal protective equipment and $1500 for duty travel) Eligible for AmeriCorps Award of $1,956.35 (Requires 450 hours) All allowances are subject to applicable federal, state, and local taxes.
