Conservation Begins HereArcheology Individual Placement at Mountain Baker-Snoqualmie National ForestPosition Summary The archaeology individual placement will work with the Heritage Program Manager and Assistant Forest Archaeologist as a part of a team responsible for inventory, monitoring, evaluation, and management of cultural resources within the Baker River EA project area. Specific duties include : taking field notes, creating field maps, taking photos, operating a handheld GPS unit, and assisting with delineating site boundaries and completing site condition assessments. Field duties will include pedestrian survey, excavating shovel test units, screening soil matrix, recording / collecting artifacts and recording soil data. Office duties include background research, preparing site condition assessment forms, assisting with database management, preparing official archaeological site forms, and drafting site maps using ArcPro.LocationSedro Wooley, WASchedule June 2, 2025 - September 28, 2025Key Duties and Responsibilities Compiling and synthesizing existing data and historical records relative to the project analysis area in preparation for field survey and report writingConducting routine field reconnaissance in areas planned for such activities as timber harvesting, wildlife habitat improvement, road construction, and recreational developmentIdentifying and recording archeological sites, preparing site location maps, photographing artifacts, and preparing sites sketchesReporting findings, entering survey and site data into the appropriate databases, and preparing recommendations to be incorporated in environmental analysis reports concerning possible effects.Marginal Duties Position may also require : Attending project meetings and safety trainingsProviding additional support for small-scale Section 106 projects in the same area as neededGIS data and record corrections and data entryRequired Qualifications Archaeology field school or equivalent field experience that has provided knowledge of the theories, principles, and concepts of archeology, including reconnaissance, evaluation, and basic field survey procedures to conduct reconnaissance and surveys.Enrollment in archaeology / anthropology degree program or related field associated with history or culture of the region.Knowledge of the various cultures and ethnic groups who inhabited the region in past periods to evaluate archeological findings and conduct surveys.Ability to navigate forested environments using maps and GPS.Experience using GPS and GIS applications.Valid driver license.This SCA Position is authorized under the Public Land Corps Authority. All participants must be between the ages of 16 and 30, inclusive, or veterans age 35 or younger. Participants must also be a citizen or national of the United States or lawful permanent resident alien of the United States. Hours served can be applied toward the Public Land Corps (PLC) hiring authority.Preferred Qualifications Bachelors degree in anthropology / archaeology or related field.Knowledge of ArcMap or ArcPro.Hours 40 per weekLiving Accommodations Duty Station is Sedro-Woolley.
