Assistant Dean - Student Development

Reporting to the VP of Academic and Student Affairs, the Assistant Dean - Student Development manages student development programs and leads staff in the effective delivery of student services, working in collaboration with management and key stakeholders to ensure students receive the support services needed to help them succeed. 

The Assistant Dean – Student Development also leads the college’s First Year Experience (FYE) initiative, managing the college’s FYE plan and executing programs and initiatives to support first-year students in their academic and social transition and integration into the college community, with a focus on student success and retention.  Performs related duties as required.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES

 

·       Oversees the administration of student development programs, monitoring day-to-day operations and ensuring the effective and efficient delivery of student support services by departmental staff.

·       Serves as liaison with other college department to coordinate the referral of students to other areas such areas as Admissions and Assessment, Registrar’s Office. Financial Aid, and Business Office to assure that students receive needed services.

·       Evaluates assigned staff in accordance with agreed upon deliverables for core goals/objectives; District and campus policies; and collective bargaining agreements.

·       Maintains records according to requirements and needs of the college and its programs. Monitors data on student retention and completion. Ensures student learning outcomes are tracked and assessed.

·       Works with Instructional Departments to implement strategies for improving student retention and graduation.

·       Works with Dean and key stakeholders in reviewing student conduct complaints citing violation of student conduct policy per the Academic and Student Policy manual.

·       Advises students of student conduct complaint, college’s student conduct policies and behavioral expectations.  

·       Reviews data tracking student retention and completion and prepares various reports for use by management in assessing student development strategies.

·       Works collaboratively with cross-functional teams to implement a framework of FYE programs and support services for first-year students including orientation, college success classes/workshops, academic alert system, and welcome events.

·       Facilitates the integration of first-year student and other targeted populations to the college community, coordinating campus events to introduce students to co-curricular activities, support programs and services, student organizations and other student engagement opportunities.

·       Develops on-going opportunities to assist in the academic and social transition and integration of first-year students to the CCC community.

·       Leads work teams in the monitoring of first-year students to identify areas for improvement, service gaps, and opportunities to assist students in maintaining academic success and successfully transitioning to a college environment.

·       Serves on various committees as assigned campus and district level.

·       Must be able and willing to work some weekends and evenings.

·       Performs other duties as assigned.

REPORTING RELATIONSHIPS

Reports To                       VP of Academic and Student Affairs

QUALIFICATIONS

·       A Master’s degree from an accredited college or university in Education, Administration/Management, a Social Science discipline, or related area

·       Three years of supervisory/management level experience in education administration, preferably in higher education, in areas such as assessment, career services, or counseling

·       Knowledge of student development theory and best practices

·       Knowledge of first-year student program best practices; principles and theories that strengthen resiliency factors for first-year student

·       Knowledge of academic support structures relating to student retention and success

·       Knowledge of state and federal regulations governing student confidentiality and other student related issues

·       Demonstrated commitment to diversity, inclusiveness, and equity in education

·       Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with internal and external stakeholders the public

·       Ability to develop, communicate, and implement departmental policies and practices

·       Excellent oral, written and interpersonal communication skills.

·       Must be able and willing to work some evenings and weekends

·       Proficiency in the use Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook)
