POSITION SUMMARY:
To provide instructional support through transliteration and interpretation for students, which enables them to learn and achieve to the maximum of their abilities. This position to reports to the Principal.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:
Transliterate/interpret information accurately, conveying the thought, intent and spirit of the sender in a manner appropriate to the student’s communication level.
Reverse interpret information accurately, conveying the thought, intent and spirit of the sender.
Facilitate communication among hearing impaired students and their hearing peers, classroom teachers, and other educational personnel.
Maintain the Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf (RID) code of Ethics at all times. Plan work by obtaining in advance an overview of new work for each student served.
Communicate with the teacher of the hearing impaired and regular education teachers concerning the needs of students with hearing impairments.
Provide orientation regarding deafness, interpreter roles, and special equipment to hearing students and staff.
All other duties, as assigned and required, in order to perform the above services.
KEY JOB REQUIREMENTS:
Bachelor’s degree or higher required.
Prior educational interpretation experience preferred.
Proficiency in the transliteration and/or interpretation of information at a normal conversational rate to deaf/hard-of-hearing students across educational settings. Proficiency in reverse interpretation of the communication of deaf/hard-of-hearing students to school personnel.
Must hold or be eligible for an Educator Interpreter License issued by the GaPSC.
Hold a valid certification through the Registry of Interpreters
for the Deaf (RID); Pass the Educational Interpreter
Performance Assessment (EIPA) at level 3.5 or higher within
five (5) years preceding the date of application and hold a
bachelor’s degree or higher in any field from a GaPSC-
accepted, accredited institution of higher education;
(i) If the applicant is applying for licensure with the EIPA and does not meet the degree requirement, the initial five (5) year license will be issued and the degree requirement must be met for renewal.
Varied; supervisor is available to review established broad objectives; independent judgment is required.
Requires regular, frequent communication with internal school administrative personnel.
Requires regular, frequent communication with different constituencies: external agencies, parents, community etc.
Excellent classroom management required.
Applies, recommends and implements technology to improve the effectiveness of school operations.
Normal office setting. Must be able to stand and walk. May be required to work a flexible schedule to include late evening and weekend duties.
Light duty - On most occasions sitting at a desk or table; intermittently sitting, standing, or stooping. Moderate lifting or carrying.
NOTE: This is a grade 28, 190-day position.
