What are the responsibilities and job description for the Sign Language Specialist position at Student Support Services?
TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT
Length of position: 214 Days per year - Classified Position
Hours: 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM
SUMMARY
Under the supervision of the Supervisor of Sign Language Services, the Sign Language Specialist plans and presents daily instructional activities for sign language classes, evaluates and documents appropriate data to monitor student/staff progress, promotes cultural competency, and serves as a SLPI interviewer and rater.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
- Provides coordinated educational programming for staff, students, and families
- Tailors lesson plans and instruction to meet the communication goals of various stakeholders
- Utilizes curricula in a way that reflects the diverse educational, cultural, and linguistic backgrounds of all the stakeholders served
- Assists with assessment, development, and implementation of curriculum to teach sign language classes to staff, students, and parents/families
- Mentoring in various areas of sign language for interpreters, community, and statewide projects
- Assists with SLPI interviews, ratings, and reports
- Assists with Communication Skills Workshop
- Assists with Special Education Language Acquisition assessments and data collection
- Assists with programs and services within the Student Support Services Division (e.g., Family Weekend Retreat, New Student and Family Orientation)
- Assists with Signing Stampede
- Compile and analyze data; maintain and file reports, records, and other documents required
NON-ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
- Assists with documentation of attendance for classes and workshops as appropriate
- Other duties as assigned
QUALIFCATIONS REQUIRED
- 5 years of experience teaching sign language to second language users
- Must have any of the following certifications: ASLTA, ASL Bilingual teacher certification, BEI Level III-Intermediary or above/RID CDI
- Sign Language: The ultimate required proficiency level for the position using the levels designated in the Sign Language Proficiency Interview (SLPI) is SUPERIOR. If hired with a sign language proficiency level below this level, you are required to participate in signed communication learning opportunities on a regular basis until you have achieved the sign language proficiency level assigned to your position.
QUALIFICATIONS DESIRED
- Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in a related subject
- ASL Bilingual Certification
- VCSL Evaluator Certification
- EST/RST Evaluator Certification
- Experience with the Kendall Language and Communication Profile (P-Levels)
- Experience with video editing programs
- Proficient sign communications skills
- Experience with distance learning
