What are the responsibilities and job description for the Supervising Special Education Teacher (Low Incidence) - 25/26 SY position at STUDENT SUPPORT SERVICES?
The Supervising Teacher position is an innovative and exciting role for experienced teachers to gain hands-on leadership experience by serving as a mentor to Paraeducators and/or Interim Teachers as they take lead of the classroom. Supervising Teachers will be responsible for lesson planning, case management and oversight of the implementation of lesson plans for up to two (2) classrooms as determined by the Office of Student Support Services. Supervising Teachers may also provide constructive feedback to Paraeducators as they monitor lesson plan delivery and student progress.
Our Teachers develop and implement instructional programs that effectively provide the best possible education for each and every student. This role provides teaching oversight in self-contained classrooms to students who have special needs (Autism, Developmental Delays, Multiple Disabilities, Intellectual and Emotional Disabilities) whose educational needs are not met by a general education environment.
Essential Job Functions:
- Plans, implements and oversees the delivery of specialized instruction in low incidence special education classrooms
- Supervises assigned classrooms to evaluate the effectiveness of planned instruction and its delivery by the assigned Paraeducator(s); monitors student performance, tailoring instruction techniques as appropriate and providing valuable feedback to Paraeducaitors at a regular cadence
- Mentors, supports and leads Paraeducators to delivery high quality instruction; fosters the development of fundamental skills for Paraeducators by serving as a role model
- Reports student and team member performance to the Office of Student Support Services
- Maintains ongoing records of student performance and Individualized Education Programs (IEP) implementation in order to evaluate progress
- Assists in screening, evaluating and recommending placements of students for the division’s special education program
- Serves as a member of an interdisciplinary team whose purpose is to provide appropriate educational programs for students with disabilities
- Holds periodic parent conferences and/or home visits
- Works cooperatively with fellow educators to interpret the abilities/disabilities of students and to assist educators in their goal of students achievement; works collaboratively with Central Office staff

Education and Experience:
- Bachelor’s Degree from an accredited college or university
- Three (3) years of successful, full-time experience as a Special Education Teacher
- Ability to obtain appropriate license (s) and/or endorsement(s) as required by the Commonwealth of Virginia and School Board

Employment Terms: Employment may be offered as a 10-Month (200 Day), 10.5-Month (210 Day), 11-Month (220 Day) -OR- 12-Month (240 Day) contract, at a minimum of 7.5 hours worked per day.
Compensation Note: Additional compensation (12.5% of base salary and an additional stipend) will be tied to this position for case management and supervision responsbilities.
