Job Title : Middle School Advocate (after school teacher) part-time, non-exempt
Commitment : August 24, 2024-May , 2025 (Monday-Thursday, 3 : 00 pm-7 : 00 pm)
On Site in Durham @ WG Pearson Center
Compensation : Base pay for this position starts at $15 / hour.

The Work
The Middle School Advocate role is designed for passionate individuals who believe fervently in the brilliance and potential of our students.
Advocates will work daily throughout the school year with a cohort of 15-20 middle school students, supporting students" academic growth and social & emotional wellness.
Advocates will work closely with tutors and Student U staff to ensure that each of our students receives the support, intervention, and enrichment that they need to be the most successful academic, emotional, and social versions of themselves during the school year.
Advocates will also be responsible for leading one of our academic time spaces. Academic time spaces consist of a schoolwork room, solo room, and student lounges.
Schoolwork room is a space where students can work on homework, tutors will also be available in this space for students.
Solo room is a silent space for students that don"t have homework or want a quiet work space to complete their work. Student lounges are a space where students can go after they have completed at least 30 minutes of academic work.

JOB RESPONSIBILITIES : (in person)
Student Support and Advocacy (40%) :
Lead and oversee the study room for the assigned cohort of students.
Meet with students regularly to create and maintain individualized growth / study plans.
Serve as a liaison between Student U, Durham Public School teachers, students, and families.
Coordinate the use of tutors and non-academic supports.
Create a culture rooted in love and high expectations.
Facilitate whole-group community building spaces with students.
Build positive and supportive relationships with students.
Academic Coaching and Wellness Instruction (40%) :
Provide social-emotional and non-academic support lessons (wellness wednesdays).
Assign individual tutors to students in need when necessary.
Track individualized growth and study plans for each student.
Staff Collaboration, Data Collection and Professional Development (20%) :
Collaborate with the middle school advocate team and program staff members to ensure effective program execution.
Reflect on teaching practices and ensure high-quality instruction.
Collect data (student grades, attendance) and participate in the evaluation of Year Round Programming.
Meet deadlines and demonstrate organizational skills.
Commit to learning, growth, and reflection.
Demonstrate excellent communication and interpersonal skills, including the ability to engage with diverse audiences.
It"s important to note that these percentages are flexible and can be adjusted based on the specific priorities and needs of the middle school program.
