    The Student Union, Inc. is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit auxiliary that maintains three major facilities at San José State University in downtown San José, California. These facilities include the Diaz Compean Student Union Building, the Provident Credit Union Event Center, and the Spartan Recreation and Aquatic Center. The Student Union, Inc. functions as part of the Student Affairs Division on campus, and is governed by a Board of Directors made up of a student majority, faculty, and administrators.

    Job Summary
    Reporting to the Executive Director to the Supervisor, Student Success Leadership and Assessment is responsible for providing an environment of collaboration and building strong relationships with internal and external constituents to implement the following:
    • Corporation Assessment: Manage the development and implementation of a comprehensive program of assessment for the purpose of SUI corporation improvements in support of SUI corporation mission and its effectiveness.
    • Student Success: Develop, manage, and supervise a comprehensive Student Success program for all student employees. Leading the student success committee, oversee and work with supervisors and managers of student employees to implement student success program and develop student learning outcomes at the student administrative/supervisory and program levels.

    Essential Functions and Tasks:
    Corporation Assessment
    • Develop, plans, organizes, and coordinates a comprehensive corporation assessment practice for all SUI departments, programs, and services that support the goals of the SUI corporation strategic plan.
    • Develops and establishes operating goals, policies, and procedures for the Student Success and Assessment function as appropriate; recommends, implements, and administers methods and procedures to enhance operational effectiveness and efficiency.
    • Coordinates and works with department directors, supervisors, managers in the development and implementation of the assessment process, tools (Campus Labs, etc.), collection data, and analysis of various assessment data; including program reviews to support department and corporation goals.
    • Prepares assessment findings and annual reports to summarize such findings, with particular emphasis on the quality of the assessment efforts and findings that influence SUI corporation decision-making and policy development.
    • Provides strategic advice and consultation to leadership in the development, implementation, and evaluation of modifications and enhancements to existing operations, systems, and procedures, including student success initiatives for program growth.
    • Manages all assessment and student success records, stores, manages, and disseminates confidential and sensitive assessment data, as appropriate.

    Student Success
    • Develops a Student Success program for the SUI corporation all student employees, including core competencies, metrics, and rubrics, Student Learning Outcome (SLOs) and Service Outcomes (SO) benchmarks.
    • Leads the development, organization, analysis and reporting of SLOs and related activities to support planning activities.
    • Develops effective strategies for continuous business and co-curricular activities assessment, and improvement of student learning through consultation, mentoring and hands-on training.
    • Work with the Student Success committee (SSC), SUI staff and administrators to develop effective strategies for workplace assessment of student learning outcomes at the student administrative and program levels.
    i. Development of workshops for supervisor/manager training on the development of SLOs for student employee positions.
    ii. Develop statistical models to measure impact of learning support services on student achievement of intended learning outcomes.
    iii. Develop item analysis reports as necessary to help supervisors/managers evaluate the effectiveness of tests and test items.
    iv. Identify and problem-solve issues that arise with SLO implementations and assessment plan.
    v. Coordinate the collection, evaluation, and dissemination of all assessment results to all departments and appropriately archive assessment activities.
    • Serve as repository for all Student Success evidence and Assessment reports.
    • Serve on the Division of Student Affairs Student Success committee to align university and corporation plans for overall student success.
    • Performs miscellaneous job-related duties as assigned.

    Supervisory Responsibilities:
    • Indirect supervision of corporation supervisors/managers with oversight of student employees to execute the Student Success program; including but not limited to:
    1. Supervise the SLO development, implementation, and assessment process and program execution;
    2. Provide training and resources necessary to meet performance standards and assist supervisors/managers improve performance relevant to requirements to fulfill the Student Success Program outcomes;
    3. Assures that SLO and assessments are aligned with the goals of the Student Union, the University and the learning outcomes of the Student Affairs Division.

Identifies and resolves problems in a timely manner; Develops project plans; coordinates projects; communicates changes and progress; completes projects on time and budget; completes administrative tasks correctly and on time.
    • Communication Proficiency – Acts and behaves in a manner that reflects respects, courtesy and civility, appreciation, empathy, trust, inclusion and consultation. Establishes and maintains effective work relationships; offers assistance and support to co-workers. Understands lines of reporting, responsibility, and accountability.

    • Compliance for Law, Policies and Code, and Issues Related to Safety-and-Risk – Adheres to compliance laws, policies and codes related to not- for-profit corporations, facility safety and concerns, as well as state and CSU mandates. Implements procedures to identify and correct potentially hazardous or unsafe working conditions. Mitigates risk where appropriate through knowledge of policies and procedures.

    Minimum Qualifications and Specifications:
    • Graduation from an accredited four-year university. Requires a Bachelor's degree and 2-5 years of previous professional experience.
    • Excellent interpersonal skills and a demonstrated ability to work with diverse members of the university community including students, faculty, staff, administrators, and accreditors.
    • Demonstrated ability for effective organizational skills, attention to detail, and ability to connect to the student success to mission and strategic priorities of the SUI corporation strategy.
    • Ability to synthesize and analyze quantitative and qualitative data and prepare and present reports effectively.


    Knowledge, Skills and Abilities (KSAs)

    • Knowledge of student success, research, trends, initiatives and metric for success.
    • Knowledge of student development theory, principles, practices, and goals to implement student success program across corporation departments for student employee success and effective leadership transformation to career success.
    • Ability to plan, create, program, and manage statistical computer databases across multiple hardware and operating system platforms/environments.
    • Advanced verbal and written communication skills.
    • Knowledge of student success core competencies, student outcomes assessment principles, methods and techniques.
    • Technical leadership and supervisory skills, and the ability to motivate staff productivity and performance for program implementation, assessment and outcome success.
    • Ability to analyze complex problems, interpret operational needs, and develop integrated, creative solutions.
    • Knowledge of budget preparation and fiscal management.

    California State University (CSU) Learning & Development

    All employees are required to complete the following compliance online training sessions through CSULearn, the University's employee training platform. Employees will be enrolled in the training soon after their appointment is processed and will be notified via email from CSULearn@sjsu.edu.
