Peer Mentor Contract
Peer Mentors of the LSAMP Summer Bridge are trained paraprofessional staff members of the Office of Access, Opportunity and Achievement (OAOA). During the Summer Bridge (SB), Peer Mentors are responsible for assisting pre-first year students with their academic, social, and personal transition into the college environment. Summer Bridge is the transition from high school to college life with the focus on STEM. Peer Mentors support this transition through their specific roles outlined below.
Peer Mentor Role and Responsibilities
In order to facilitate the best experience for the pre-first year students during the SB, Peer Mentors will:
- Live in the residence hall along with the pre-first year students in order to help them make a successful transition to residential life.
Peer Mentors will:
- Educate students and enforce all residence hall policies and procedures.
- Educate students and enforce policies related to drug and alcohol use, as well as Ithaca community standards.
- Prepare residence hall for student arrival and complete check-in assignments as required.
- Be on overnight on-call status as assigned.
- Work closely with a pre-assigned group of pre-first year students monitoring their academic, social, professional and personal development, as well as their acclimation to the program and to IC.
Peer Mentors will:
- Serve as a positive role model using appropriate language, exemplifying a positive attitude and modeling behavior expected from students.
- Hold one-on-ones with each student and complete contact sheets.
- Educate students regarding behaviors that will result in a positive academic experience at IC
- i.e. being on time for class; developing study hours; class participation, timely submission of assignments, developing relationships with IC faculty/staff, finding a mentor, etc.
- Communicate regularly and disseminate appropriate information to students about SB events and activities.
- Attend all SB sessions as assigned.
- Work with SB supervising staff on a regular basis.
Peer Mentors will:
- Be responsible for the safety and security of office keys. Keys are not to be shared with non-OAOA staff.
- Communicate student progress, concerns and issues that arise with the SB staff.
- Assist in the preparation and cleanup of SB events.
- Chaperone off-campus trips unless otherwise specified by the SB staff.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Salary : $16
