What are the responsibilities and job description for the STUDENT-Campus Center Operations Staff position at Student?
Operations staff members must be able to take direction and complete tasks independently, display a positive attitude even when doing challenging physical work, and be enthusiastic to help the IC community and guests as well as co-workers. Operations Staff must attend weekly staff meetings (Tuesdays at 12:15pm), and must also be prepared to work frequent early mornings, late nights, and weekends in all three of our service areas.
Information Desk Area
At the Information Desk, the Operations Staff must exhibit outstanding customer service while working independently. Whether it’s answering phone calls or assisting people who walk up to the Information Desk, or those who engage via the online chat, the Operations Staff members must be knowledgeable about schools and departments at IC and the Ithaca community. These valuable staff members are usually the first person someone calls when seeking information about the college, and the ability to use college resources and the internet to seek out answers is vital to answering each question in a timely and correct manner. While working at the Information Desk, Operations Staff also manage the campus Lost and Found (tagging, tracking, and retrieving lost items and assisting with other tasks and projects as needed).
Recreation Center Area
The Operations Staff also oversees all activities in the Recreation Center, ensuring that students are utilizing equipment in a safe and appropriate manner (billiard tables, ping-pong table, etc). To do this, the staff members in the Recreation Center must also exhibit exceptional student service skills, since they are supervising and managing student visitors to space throughout their shift. Staff members also need to be comfortable with confrontation, addressing any behaviors that don’t comply with policies or may be inappropriate or unsafe.
Set-Up Area
These shifts are spread out throughout the week and weekend. The times are different each day and week, based on the events that take place. This area requires schedule flexibility, and staff members are expected to take a minimum of one or two set-up shifts each week. These shifts are assigned and reviewed in our weekly staff meetings. While setting up and taking down events, the Operations Staff must have thorough knowledge of where set up equipment is stored in the building, proper and safe use of equipment, and working knowledge of set-up terms and styles.
