1.) Community Engagement Docents at the History Center in Tompkins County
Summary
The History Center is a generation to generation education and research center whose aim is to preserve the History in Tompkins County and help people use the tools of history to understand the past, gain perspective on the present, and play an informed role in shaping the future. Our organization has been stewarding community history for over 80 years. We are comprised of archives and collections, a research library, the exhibit hall, and the Eight Square Schoolhouse.
Exhibit Hall Docents are an integral part of THC community engagement. They are a knowledgeable, conversational, and uplifting presence in our museum front in the Ithaca Commons. They also work to support the Community Engagement Manager through projects tailored to individual docent's strengths.
Purpose of the Position: The purpose of this position is to provide a learning experience for emerging professionals that supports the mission of the History Center in Tompkins County.
Duties and Responsibilities
- Greeting Visitors
- Utilizing Exhibit Hall resources to become a knowledgeable conversationalist on the exhibit
- Tracking and digitizing foot traffic
- Caring for the exhibit hall
- Suggesting areas for potential improvement within the Exhibit Hall
- Developing a personal project with the help of the Community Engagement Manager that enhances visitor engagement, online or in-person. Potential projects include: developing social media campaigns, contributing to web revisions, blogging, and best-practice research.
Knowledge/Experience Required
- Some customer service experience preferred
- Comfortability with Google App Suite
- Willingness to develop new skills
- Willingness to learn in-person fundraising techniques.
Special Requirements: While this position is visitor-first, it will require the regular use of a computer. This position is in-person, located in the Ithaca Commons.
2.) Living History Docents at the History Center in Tompkins County
Summary: The History Center is a generation to generation education and research center whose aim is to preserve the History in Tompkins County and help people use the tools of history to understand the past, gain perspective on the present, and play an informed role in shaping the future. Our organization has been stewarding community history for over 80 years. We are comprised of archives and collections, a research library, the exhibit hall, and the Eight Square Schoolhouse.

Purpose of the Position: The purpose of this position is to provide a learning experience for emerging professionals that supports the mission of the History Center in Tompkins County.

- Researching and developing a living history character
- Enacting a living history character for exhibit hall visitors
Knowledge/Experience Required
- Some customer service experience preferred
- Comfortability with acting and improvisation
- Comfortability with Google App Suite
- Willingness to develop new skills
Special Requirements
While this position is visitor-first, it will require the regular use of a computer. This is also a position that will be best completed over a period of at least two semesters. This position is in-person, located in the Ithaca Commons.
3.) Hybrid-Remote Assistant to the History Center in Tompkins County
Summary: The History Center is a generation to generation education and research center whose aim is to preserve the History in Tompkins County and help people use the tools of history to understand the past, gain perspective on the present, and play an informed role in shaping the future. Our organization has been stewarding community history for over 80 years. We are comprised of archives and collections, a research library, the exhibit hall, and the Eight Square Schoolhouse.
The remote assistant will support the Community Engagement Manager by sharing excellent organizational skills, crucial communication skills, and attention to detail.
Purpose of the Position: The purpose of this position is to provide a learning experience for emerging professionals that supports the mission of the History Center in Tompkins County.
Duties and Responsibilities
- Schedule in-person shifts at least once a month for content research
- Develop social media and web content
- Support the web revision process
- Support digital fundraising efforts
- Participate in the Community Engagement Committee at the History Center
Knowledge/Experience Required
- General remote-work proficiencies (Zoom, ClickUp, Email Communication)
- Comfortability with Google App Suite
- Willingness to develop new skills
- Willingness to learn digital fundraising techniques.
- A willingness to learn new platforms like Hootsuite and Mailchimp
Special Requirements: This position will require regular use of a computer and phone. This position will require in-person work 2-3 times a month, located in the Ithaca Commons at the History Center.
Pay Rate: $ 16.00
