Position Overview
The qualified candidate will support new product development and qualification testing efforts within the SubCom R&D organization. New products will include cable, cable joints, cable repairs, repeater couplings and related products. New product designs, new fiber types, and alternate materials will be tested.
Responsibilities
- Coordinate, set up, and run various tensile and temperature tests of cable and joint samples.
- Perform cable end sample prep and termination to support cable testing efforts.
- Perform optical fiber splicing to support cable testing efforts.
- Perform setup and configuration of instruments to perform cable testing.
- Collect, save, and distribute data from testing efforts.
- Oversee and manage instrument calibration and maintenance.
- Oversee and manage sample inventory.
- Help establish testing priorities.
- Maintain standardized test procedure documents.
- Support various product development effort at team meetings.
Qualifications
- Two-year degree in a technical or vocational discipline, or equivalent experience.
- Prior hands-on experience in the wire and cable industry. Prior experience with cable manufacturing processes, cable end preparation, fiber handling/splicing.
- Organizational skills to manage testing schedules for the tensile bed and temperature chamber.
- Math skills required to perform technical duties.
- Basic ability to use mechanical and electrical measuring equipment (ex. micrometers, calipers, ohm meter, thermocouples).
- Basic computer skills (Word, Excel) writing instructions and reports. Drafting experience (AutoCAD) would be a plus.
- Basic troubleshooting skills (mechanical, electrical, optical).
- Familiarity with cable testing equipment such as tensile testers, load cells, optical power meters, and temperature chamber equipment.
