Job description
SubSurface Surveys is seeking a full-time, Utility Locator Technician for our Carlsbad, California Office. The Utility Locator Technician will report to the Project Manager and will be responsible for conducting fieldwork which includes, communicating with clients, performing utility locating surveys using various instruments, and writing final survey reports. Expect a significant amount of outdoor fieldwork, early start hours, and traveling (to include some nights and weekends).
The responsibilities of this position include, but are not limited to:
- Operating geophysical instruments such as ground penetrating radar (GPR), electromagnetic (EM61 and M-Scope), magnetic gradiometer, and line tracing utility locators.
- Communicating with clients
- Be detail oriented and be able to meet specified schedules
Required Qualifications:
- BS/BA in a science related degree or equivalent
- College level technical writing skills
- Valid driver’s license with a clean driving record
- Willingness to work overtime and on occasional weekends
- Basic computer skills
- Good communication skills and the ability to work well with a team
- Commitment to detail and quality of work
- Physically able to work outdoors under all conditions
- Ability to handle multiple tasks within the same day
Preferred:
- Experience using utility locating instruments: EM61, M-Scope, Utility line locators, and GPR
- Proficiency with computer software: SURFER, Microsoft Office products, and Google Earth
- OSHA 40-hour Hazwoper certification
Additional Qualities
- Must be able to pass a background check and drug screening for clearance to work on US military bases
- Willingness to travel daily and some weekends and nights
- Must be able to carry up to 50 pounds
- Don personal protective gear as needed, and be able to walk on uneven ground/slopes
- Strong sense of accountability and time management
- Exceptional communication, organizational, technical, and analytical skills
- Strong written and verbal communication skills
